Saudi Arabia Implements Midday Break Law to Protect Outdoor Workers During Summer

Riyadh : In a move aimed at protecting the health and safety of workers during the scorching summer months, Saudi Arabia has announced the implementation of a mandatory midday work break for outdoor laborers. The regulation will be in effect from June 15 to September 15, prohibiting work under direct sunlight from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

The directive was issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development in coordination with the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health. It specifically targets workers in the private sector who are engaged in jobs that expose them to extreme heat, such as construction and outdoor maintenance.

The ministry emphasized that employers must reorganize work schedules to comply with the midday break rule, ensuring that workers are not exposed to the dangers of heat stress and sunstroke. The new policy is part of broader efforts across the Gulf region, with several neighboring countries already enforcing similar summer work hour regulations.

A comprehensive guideline outlining the risks of heat exposure and steps to prevent sun-related illnesses has been published on the Ministry’s website. This includes detailed safety protocols for both employers and employees.

Violations of the midday break rule can be reported through the Ministry’s unified hotline (19911) or its official mobile app, allowing for swift action and enforcement.

This initiative reinforces Saudi Arabia’s commitment to workplace safety, employee welfare, and compliance with international labor standards, particularly during the intense summer season.
