RIYADH: In preparation for the upcoming Hajj season, the Royal Commission for Mecca City and the Holy Sites has announced comprehensive infrastructure and service enhancements designed to improve the pilgrimage experience for millions of visitors.
Key developments include extensive transportation upgrades, pedestrian comfort measures, and healthcare facilities aimed at ensuring safety, efficiency, and convenience throughout the pilgrimage.
Enhanced Pedestrian Infrastructure
To ease crowd movement and enhance comfort, 36,000 square metres of pedestrian pathways in the central area have been widened and shaded, with designated prayer zones introduced to manage foot traffic. In Muzdalifah, a new 170,000 square metre rubber-floored pedestrian path has been constructed, supported by the planting of 10,000 trees to provide natural shade and help reduce heat stress.
Modernised Transport Network
From 15 Dhu Al-Qa’dah to 30 Dhu Al-Hijjah, 400 buses will operate across 12 key routes, connecting 431 stops and four major transit stations. The “Mecca Taxi” system has been upgraded with high-capacity waiting zones and improved operational flow. Additionally, electric scooters, introduced last year, will be available on three strategic routes, promoting sustainable and convenient mobility.
Healthcare & Safety Measures
In Mina, a fully equipped 200-bed hospital has been established, supplemented by 71 emergency medical centres located along vital routes. Pilgrim rest areas have been enhanced with shaded seating and 400 water coolers, ensuring access to hydration and respite from the heat.
Improved Facilities for Pilgrims
To accommodate the growing number of pilgrims, the commission has introduced multi-level tent accommodations and two-storey restroom complexes, maximising available space while enhancing comfort and accessibility.
These initiatives form part of Saudi Arabia’s broader commitment to elevating the Hajj experience, ensuring the safety, health, and spiritual focus of every pilgrim throughout their sacred journey.
