Police patrolling a necessity in Atal Tunnel as three accidents happen in 72 hours

NIRMAL YESODA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh to the nation recently. As the tunnel measuring 9.02 kilometers gained nationwide attention, several people from various regions reached the Kullu district to enjoy their ride through this horseshoe-shaped road. However, due to reckless driving, three accidents happened inside the tunnel in 72 hours, and it has literally alarmed the authorities.

According to reports, drivers are speeding through the tunnel, and it is considered one of the main reasons for accidents. Some other drivers are stopping midway inside the tunnel to take photographs.

“Three accidents were reported in a single day after the tunnel was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on October 3. The accidents were recorded by the CCTV cameras installed inside the tunnel. Showing a complete disregard for traffic rules, tourists and motorists have been clicking selfies while riding,” said Brigadier K.P. Purushothaman, BRO Chief Engineer, Atal Tunnel.

Purushothaman also talked about the necessity of conducting tight police patrolling inside the tunnel to prevent further mishaps.

“Once the inaugural function finished, there has been scant deployment of traffic police personnel, resulting in complete chaos and rash driving by tourists from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh,” Purushothaman said.

Police have installed Doppler radar inside the tunnel, and any driver who exceeds the speed limit of 80 kilometers an hour will be fined.
