Oman-UAE Hafeet Rail Project Partners with Itaminas to Boost Sustainable Iron Ore Logistics

Muscat : The Hafeet Rail project, a strategic cross-border railway linking the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates, has entered into a landmark partnership with Itaminas, a leading Brazilian iron ore producer. This collaboration aims to establish an integrated, efficient, and environmentally sustainable freight transportation system across the Gulf region.

The agreement is expected to significantly enhance iron ore logistics operations between Oman and the UAE, supporting the development of the region’s iron and steel industries. The initiative leverages the advanced infrastructure of the Hafeet Rail network and the strategic location of Sohar Port — a key hub for importing, handling, and processing iron ore. Sohar Port’s ongoing expansion and integration with the rail network further strengthen its role in regional logistics.

Construction of the Hafeet Rail line is progressing swiftly, with groundwork underway for key structural components such as bridges and tunnels. These developments reflect strong coordination among project stakeholders and local authorities, aiming to deliver seamless cross-border connectivity and streamlined supply chain operations.

Itaminas, known for producing high-grade iron ore, currently operates at a capacity of 6.5 million tonnes annually, with environmental permits in place to scale up to 15.5 million tonnes. As part of its international growth strategy, the company plans to export a substantial share of its production to the Middle East through Brazil’s Port of Sudeste.

In line with its ambitions to expand its global footprint, Itaminas is also exploring the possibility of localizing parts of its value chain within the GCC. The region’s robust infrastructure, reliable energy supply, and strategic geographic positioning make it an attractive destination for industrial investment and regional operations.

This partnership marks a significant step forward in regional economic cooperation and sustainable industrial development, reinforcing the Oman-UAE Hafeet Rail project’s role as a catalyst for transformative logistics and trade in the Gulf.
