Muscat: Oman has successfully completed its nationwide shutdown of the 3G mobile network, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to next-generation telecommunications technologies. The multi-phase project, launched in the third quarter of 2024, was designed to enhance service quality, repurpose frequency bands for advanced networks, and boost energy efficiency across the telecom sector.
According to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), the process began in less densely populated areas, with 700 3G towers deactivated in the governorates of Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, and Musandam in July 2024. This was followed by the closure of 584 stations in Al Dakhiliyah in December 2024, and 864 stations in Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates.
In January 2025, the transition continued with the shutdown of 1,835 stations across South Al Batinah, North Al Batinah, South Al Sharqiyah, and North Al Sharqiyah. The final phase took place in the second quarter of 2025, with the closure of 1,699 stations in Muscat Governorate, excluding a few 3G stations near Muscat International Airport, which remain operational temporarily due to technical considerations.
As part of the initiative, 3G frequency bands were reassigned to support 4G, 5G, and IoT services, contributing to the modernization of more than 5,600 telecom sites across the Sultanate.
The TRA highlighted several key achievements:
These improvements position Oman among the first nations globally to fully phase out 3G services, reflecting its strong commitment to digital advancement and sustainable infrastructure in line with Oman Vision 2040.
The successful migration to high-speed networks not only enhances connectivity and user experience but also lays the groundwork for the further development of smart cities, IoT applications, and future-ready communication systems.
