Oman celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities

MUSCAT : Speaking on the occasion, Hamad bin Saif Al Sawafi, Director of the Department of People with Disabilities at the Directorate General of Social Development in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, pointed out the role of the Ministry of Social Development in the field of people with disabilities. He explained that the focus is on developing and preparing a comprehensive strategy as an addition to the efforts made by Al Wafa Centers, private centers, associations, charitable teams and other civil institutions interested in this category.

The celebration included a presentation on the ‘Skill and Sign’ initiative, a visual presentation entitled ‘Man is an Impact’, a lecture entitled ‘A Smile of Optimism’and a poem.

The celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities aimed to create a community partnership between the Ministry of Social Development and institutions in the public and private sectors, raise community awareness, discuss challenges, highlight their creative abilities and enhance society’s appreciation of their talents, while emphasising the importance of supporting and enabling them to achieve their full potential. It also aimed to encourage recreational and educational activities so as to enable persons with disabilities to participate in sports, cultural and other recreational activities.

The patron of the event, H.E. Habib bin Mohammed Al Riyami, Chairman of the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science at the Diwan of Royal Court, honoured the participants and contributors to the success of the event, and opened the accompanying exhibition dedicated to Al Wafa Centres for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate.
