Just like China, Nepal has also banned all Indian news channels barring Doordarshan news for hurting the country’s national sentiments. Reports say Nepali cable TV operators had switched off signals for Indian news channels in the country.
This movement came hours after Indian media criticised Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and his government in its news channels. Nepal Information and Broadcasting Minister Yuba Raj Khativada has confirmed the news at a press conference. He claimed that Indian media was disseminating news jeopardizing the sovereignty and respect of Nepali citizens.
Later former Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha said that the Indian media must stop spreading the baseless propaganda against Nepal. Meanwhile, the Indian government has not yet reacted to the news.
The India-Nepal bilateral ties strained after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a 80-km new road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8.
Nepal has raised objection to the inauguration of the road claiming that it lies within Nepalese territory. India rejected the claim asserting that the road lies completely within its territory.
