Modern Vyttila flyover to alleviate Kochi’s traffic congestion

Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala, has said that the Vytilla flyover constructed using the latest technology is an asset to the transport system in Kochi. He said this during the virtual inauguration of the Vyttila Flyover on January 9.

In his address, the Chief Minister said, “The development of the State is a matter of high priority for this government. For this development to be possible, the basic infrastructure like high-quality roads and bridges must be in place, without which people cannot have a good public transport system. The Public Works Department is now working with a mission of ‘New Age, New Construction’.” He commended the department for completing the project on time.

The Vyttila flyover was built entirely with the funds of the State government making it toll-free. If it was built by the National Highways Authority, people would have had to pay tolls.

The completion of the Vyttila flyover will facilitate the travel on NH 66 to Aluva and Alappuzha, and also to Ernakulam, Tripunithura and the Vyttila Hub. Even though the estimate was for Rs 85.9 crores, the contract was fixed at Rs 78.36 crores, with a saving of Rs 6.73 crore, by including the project under KIIFB.

The project was implemented as two flyovers of three lanes each. Each flyover is 440 m long with 12 spans of 30 m length and two central spans of 40 m length. The length of the flyover towards Thiruvananthapuram side is 717 m and towards Aluva side is 702.41 m, including the approach road on both sides. The project includes 320 m long and 375 m long slip roads on both sides of the flyover for easy access to the Vytila Mobility Hub. The construction also includes electric lights and drains on the service roads on both sides.

G Sudhakaran, Minister of Public Works, presided over the function while Finance Minister, Dr T. M. Thomas Isaac was the chief guest. Hibi Eden, MP; M Swaraj, P. T. Thomas, T. J. Vinod and S. Sharma (all MLAs), and Mayor M. Anil Kumar were among those present.
