Labour crimes top list of common offenses in Oman, Public Prosecution highlights over 12,400 cases

Muscat : According to the latest statistics, labour law violations have topped the list, with 12,407 cases reported, making them the most common crime in the country.

Cheque-related offenses came in second with 9,699 cases, while Foreigners’ Residence Law violations accounted for 9,154 cases. Fraud, theft, and extortion crimes rounded out the top five, with 5,343 and 4,002 cases respectively.

The Public Prosecution also reported a significant increase in the number of cases handled electronically, with 45,538 cases received through its e-services portal. This marks a 24 percent rise compared to the previous year.

The total number of judicial orders issued also reached 261,650, and 83,305 investigation reports were conducted.

In terms of regional distribution, Muscat recorded the highest number of cases with 20,852, followed by North Al Batinah with 7,500 cases, and Dhofar with 4,457 cases).

Despite the high volume of cases, the Public Prosecution achieved a remarkable success rate, with 97.9 percent of cases processed through referrals, filing, or criminal orders. The conviction or upholding of filing decisions in court also reached a success rate of 97.6 percent.

The total number of defendants for the year was 58,858, with 89.2 percent of them being male; 46.8 percent of defendants were foreigners. The number of cases referred to the Public Prosecution increased by 22.5 percent, including 43,957 misdemeanours and 2,281 felonies.
