International Flamingo Day observed

Al Ain Zoo celebrated June 23 as the International Flamingo Day in honour of its resident flamingo colonies.
The zoo has had flamingos since its establishment in 1968. Currently, there are 89 birds of three species: Chilean Flamingo, Greater and Lesser Flamingo.
The zoo coordinates with conservation partners in other parts of the UAE to give its flamingos the necessary care and preservation. In 2014, 20 flamingos were brought to the zoo from Dubai’s beaches and reserves.
There are three lakes for the flamingos, and visitors will find them distributed according to their types.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Chilean and young flamingos are classified as ‘near threatened’ and are on the Red List as their natural habitats have declined due to human activities.
Flamingos spend their time in coastal and inland lagoons, migrating and settling during different parts of the year. They are most famously found in South America, including in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and some are also found in Africa and parts of Asia, including the Middle East.
