India records 12,689 new coronavirus cases, recovery rate at 96.9 percent

As many as 12,689 new cases of novel coronavirus were reported, with India’s total COVID-19 cases now above 1.06 crore, as per the health ministry’s January 27, 2021 update.

New cases below 20,000 mark for 20th day in a row. India reported 137 new deaths and 13,320 new recoveries in the last 24 hours, the latest release show. Active cases drop to 1,76,498 with a fall of 768 cases on January 27. As many as 20,29,480 beneficiaries have been vaccinated across India till January 27.

Kerala reported the most (6,293) new cases in the last 24 hours, followed by Maharashtra (2,405), Karnataka (529), Tamil Nadu (523) and Gujarat (380). These five states account for 80 percent of all the new cases reported in India.

India’s recovery rate is now 96.9 percent. The total number of COVID-19 cases in India is now at 1,06,89,527 with 1,03,59,305 recoveries and 1,53,724 deaths as per January 27, update. The mortality rate in the country now stands at 1.4 percent with Punjab reporting the highest (3.2 percent).

Global coronavirus cases surpassed 100 million today, according to a Reuters tally, as countries around the world struggle with new virus variants and vaccine shortfalls. Almost 1.3 percent of the world’s population has now been infected with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, and more than 2.1 million people have died.

One person has been infected every 7.7 seconds, on average, since the start of the year. Around 668,250 cases have been reported each day over the same period, and the global fatality rate stands at 2.15 percent.

The worst-affected countries – the United States, India, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom – make up more than half of all reported COVID-19 cases but represent 28 percent of the global population, according to a Reuters analysis.
