Hathras case: CBI files chargesheet on basis of victim’s last statement

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 19-year old Dalit woman by four men in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh in September.

The chargesheet has been filed on the basis of the victim’s last statement given on September 22.It indicates that the victim was gangraped and murdered by the accused.

The chargesheet has been filed under sections 354, 376A, 376 D and 302 of IPC and SC ST Act.

In an official statement, the CBI said, “CBI has today filed a chargesheet against 04 accused in the Competent Court, Hathras in a case related to an incident at Hathras. The case was registered by CBI on 11th October 2020 on a request from Uttar Pradesh Govt and further notification from Govt of India.”

The Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras on September 14. She died on September 29 at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital during treatment.

The victim was cremated in the dead of the night near her home on September 30. Her family alleged they were forced by the local police to hurriedly conduct her last rites. Local police officers, however, said the cremation was carried out “as per the wishes of the family”.
