Bulgarian Tennis player and world number 19 Grigor Dimitrov confirmed that he has tested positive for coronavirus on June 21. He had recently participated in the Adria Tour alongside other players like Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem.
The 29-year old played a match against Borna Coirc in Croatia, at the Adriatic Resort of Zadar, on June 20. After the match he complained about fatigue. He said he was tested in Monaco. The exhibition is cancelled which is hosted by Novak Djokovic.
Dimitrov shared the update on his Instagram handle. “HI Everyone-I want to reach out and let my fans and friends know that I tested positive back in Monaco for COVID-19. I want to make sure anyone who has been in contact with me during these past days gets tested and takes the necessary precautions. I am so sorry for any harm I might have caused. I am back home now and recovering. Thanks for your support and please stay safe and healthy. GD,” he wrote on Instagram.
His announcement comes at a time when the U.S. Open said it would go forward with the tournament. The tournament has been suspended since March due to the pandemic and the authorities are planning to resume in August.
Novak Djokovic was sceptical about playing at the U.S. Open. Some of the sport’s top names, including defending men’s champion Rafael Nadal along with top-ranked Ash Barty, have expressed reservations about heading somewhere that was a hot spot for the COVID-19 outbreak.
Dimitrov has become the first high-profile tennis player to test positive for the virus. He was also slated to meet world no.1 Novak Djokovic on June 21 but backed out at the last minute.
