Fresh violence erupts in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri

After a woman was taken away for police interrogation, locals in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri began protesting and pelting stones. This comes a couple of days after a communal clash broke out in the area.

New Delhi: Fresh violence erupted in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Monday. An incident of stone-pelting was reported from the area. This comes after a communal clash broke out in the area during a Hanuman Jayanti procession on Saturday evening.

After a woman was taken away for interrogation in connection with Saturday’s clash, around 50 women in the area began protesting and throwing stones in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Monday, India Today’s reporter witnessed.

The woman detained by the police on Monday is the wife of accused Sonu, who allegedly opened fire during the clash on Saturday. After she was taken for police interrogation, stones were pelted from the rooftops of different homes on Monday.

As per Deputy Commissioner of Police North-West Delhi, the family members of Sonu, who is absconding at present, pelted two stones at the police when they went to his house in search of him. “Legal action is being taken. One person has been detained. The situation is under control,” the official said.

The police barricaded the area and women security personnel pacified the women.The incident took place 100 metres away from the spot where violence had broken out on Saturday.

The Rapid Action Force of the Central Reserve Police Force of India formed a human chain at the spot. Women RAF personnel with headgear were stationed there.

Nine people were injured in clashes that broke out between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area on Saturday evening. Among those injured were several police personnel.

According to the police, stones were pelted and some vehicles torched in the violence that occurred at around 6 pm on Saturday.

The Delhi Police initiated an investigation on Saturday night and has arrested 23 people so far.
