Etihad Rail: Abu Dhabi-Dubai high-speed train projected to contribute Dh145b to UAE economy over 5 decades

Abu Dhabi: Etihad Rail has unveiled its new high-speed passenger train, projected to contribute Dh145 billion to the UAE’s GDP over the next five decades, according to Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail.

Speaking to WAM at a press conference at Etihad Rail HQ, Al Shehhi emphasized that the Abu Dhabi-Dubai high-speed rail network will facilitate rapid travel and enhance economic and social integration.

The network will connect six strategically located stations: Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, and Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, and stations near Al Maktoum International Airport and the Jaddaf area in Dubai.

Operating entirely on electric power, the high-speed rail system aligns with the UAE’s “Net Zero 2050” Strategic Initiative, contributing to the nation’s sustainable development goals.
Al Shehhi confirmed that the tendering process for project contracts is complete, and network designs have been approved, demonstrating Etihad Rail’s commitment to the project’s successful implementation. Etihad Rail will be fully responsible for the development, implementation, and operation of this transformative project, marking a significant milestone in UAE transportation.

“The UAE has consistently demonstrated its leadership in spearheading significant infrastructure projects, solidifying its position as a global frontrunner in the transportation and infrastructure sectors,” Al Shehhi stated.

The inaugural passenger train fleet will accommodate approximately 400 passengers and include dedicated family-friendly amenities. The first four passenger train stations—in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah—will be integrated with existing metro and bus networks for seamless multimodal travel.
Al Shehhi highlighted the project’s importance in solidifying the UAE’s position as a global leader in smart transportation. “This achievement is a direct result of the UAE’s unwavering commitment to fostering a sustainable transportation ecosystem and modernising its infrastructure through the strategic deployment of cutting-edge technological solutions. Ultimately, this initiative will contribute to a significant enhancement in the quality of life for all residents and visitors to the UAE.”
