Our Correspondent

One in three COVID-19 cases in the UAE is the highly infectious Delta variant, according to authorities in the country.

The most common strain found in the UAE is the Beta strain – 39.2 per cent – followed by Delta at 33.9 per cent and Alpha at 11.3 per cent.

The number of deaths increased too owing to mutant viruses, failure to follow rules or take a vaccine; 94 per cent of deaths occurred in the unvaccinated; 84 per cent of reported cases and 89 per cent of hospital admissions are in the unvaccinated. Among cases admitted to intensive care, non-vaccinated people accounted for 92 per cent of cases, noted the July 27 briefing.

The UAE has provided a COVID-19 vaccine to more than 71 per cent of the total population, including residents. This is 91.8 per cent of the eligible category.

Health officials advised residents and citizens against overseas travel if they are not vaccinated.
