COVID-19: ICMR studying reinfections, identifies three cases

The Indian Council of Medical Research, which is studying reinfection among COVID-19 cases, has identified three to date, said Dr Balram Bhargava, director-general (D-G), ICMR. Two from Mumbai and one from Ahmedabad.

The cases are being looked into for further findings.

A recent study, which is published in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases, has found that reinfection could occur in Covid-19 patients, and the symptoms would likely to be more severe following the relapse of the viral infection. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has documented about two dozen cases of COVID-19 reinfection.

Meanwhile, a day after recording its lowest single-day addition to Covid tally since August 18, India on Tuesday registered a spike of 63,517 cases, taking the total count to 72,39,390. With 730 deaths in the last 24 hours, the total death toll reached 1,10,617.

The total caseload in the country stands at 72,39,390, including 8,26,876 active cases, and 63,01,928 recovered cases.

Active coronavirus cases have remained below nine lakh for six days in a row. The fatality rate was recorded at 1.53 per cent.
