COVID-19: 5,409 new cases in Kerala on Jan 14, 3 more cases of UK strain

Kerala reported 5,490 new coronavirus positive cases after 67,712 tests on January 14. The state also registered 4,337 recoveries in the last 24 hours, the Health department informed in a press statement.

67,712 samples were tested in the last 24 hours and the test positivity rate was at 8.11 percent.

4,911 people contracted the virus through contact. The source of 435 contact cases could not be traced. 19 deaths were confirmed in the last 24 hours.

The district-wise statistics of positive cases: Malappuram – 712, Ernakulam – 659, Kozhikode – 582, Pathanamthitta – 579, Kollam – 463, Kottayam – 459, Thrissur – 446, Alappuzha – 347, Thiruvananthapuram – 295, Kannur – 235, Wayanad – 229, Palakkad – 210, Idukki – 202 and Kasaragod – 72.

None of the UK returnees tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, 3 more samples of UK returnees sent to Pune NIV have been identified with UK mutant strain. These are 25 and 27-year-old males from Kannur and a 52-year-old male from Pathanamthitta. So far, 9 have been identified as mutant virus strain.

67,712 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. So far, 86,88,585 samples have been tested across various priority groups. 19 deaths have been confirmed in the last 24 hours. The total number of deaths in the state has reached 3,392.

92 of the coronavirus patients came from outside the state. 4,911 people have contracted the virus through contact.

The district-wise statistics of contact cases: Malappuram – 681, Ernakulam – 605, Kozhikode – 549, Pathanamthitta – 490, Kollam – 454, Kottayam – 418, Thrissur – 432, Alappuzha – 343, Thiruvananthapuram – 203, Kannur – 192, Wayanad – 217, Palakkad – 82, Idukki – 179 and Kasaragod – 66.

52 health workers also tested positive. Among them, 14 were from Kozhikode, 9 from Pathanamthitta, 7 from Kannur, 5 from Thrissur, 4 each from Eranakulam and Wayanad, 2 each from Kollam, Idukki, and Palakkad and 1 each from Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram and Kasaragod.

The district-wise statistics of recoveries: Thiruvananthapuram – 296, Kollam – 263, Pathanamthitta – 317, Alappuzha – 485, Kottayam – 429, Idukki – 41, Ernakulam – 599, Thrissur – 402, Palakkad – 194, Malappuram – 395, Kozhikode – 482, Wayanad – 171, Kannur – 195 and Kasaragod – 68.

Currently, there are 66,503 Covid positive cases in the state. Meanwhile, 7,61,154 people have recovered from the disease. There are 2,01,293 people under observation in the state. Out of this 1,90,389 are under home/ institutional quarantine and 10,904 people are in hospitals. 1,821 people were taken to hospitals on January 14.

Six areas were declared hotspots. Meanwhile, 13 areas were removed from the hotspot list. With this, there are a total of 420 hotspots in the state.
