Change mask every two hours to ward off corona, say Dubai doctors

NIRMAL YESODA

As the coronavirus pandemic is showing no signs of slowing down, doctors in Dubai have urged people to change masks every two hours to stay away from COVID-19 infection. The revelation from Dubai doctors could turn crucial in humanity’s attempt to curb coronavirus, as the World Health Organisation (WHO) has acknowledged masks as the best line of defence against coronavirus until scientists succeed in developing a vaccine.

According to health experts, wearing masks for a long period of time could trap spit and moisture in the masks, and it could make the person prone to infectious diseases.

“It is recommended that people use disposable three-ply face masks that can be changed every two hours to prevent many infections. Germs and microbes are present both on the internal part of the mask as well as on the outside surface and within hours, one can expect a build-up,” Dr. Atul Aundhekar, CEO of Avivo Health Care Group told the Gulf News.

Anundhekar warned that using a single mask for a prolonged period of time could make the person also prone to respiratory tract infections and face rashes.

Dr. Sarah Agha, GP for Aesthetic Dermatology at Aesthetica Clinic in Dubai Health Care City (DHCC) also shared similar views, and she made it clear that prolonged use of surgical face masks could result in acne, skin rashes, and respiratory infections.

“The microbes from our mouth are exhaled when we speak with the mask on. These mixed with droplets line the inner layers of the fabric as they are trapped. This causes a build-up of bacteria. Despite the best oral hygiene, the microbes from our mouth with a build-up mix with the humidity from the air clog the sweat pores causing infection. Those who use face masks for prolonged hours are most susceptible to skin rashes and infections,” explains Sarah.

Sarah also made it clear that cloth masks are not at all effective in reducing the chances of getting infected with the coronavirus. The expert added that masks with valves are also not recommended, as it could elevate the risks of coronavirus spread from the mask user.
