Muscat: The Civil Aviation Authority has issued a weather forecast for today, December 17, 2024, warning of dusty conditions across most governorates in Oman. Along with rising dust, there are chances of cloud advection and isolated rain along the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea.

Residents of Al Buraimi and Al Dhahirah Governorates may also experience low cloud formation. A fresh wind could further stir up dust, reducing visibility in some areas, while temperatures may drop, with frost potentially forming over higher altitudes.

DUBAI:

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), an apex body of India’s jewellery industry, recently launched the first-of-its-kind India Jewellery Exposition Centre (IJEX), a 365-day exhibition platform, in Dubai, reports said. This comes as India and UAE celebrated the first anniversary of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

This would be a much-needed platform for MSME jewellers to exhibit their indigenously products on a regular continuous basis in the Middle East market. Since the Middle East market accounts for 30 per cent of India’s gem and jewellery exports, IJEX will enable India’s MSME manufacturers to take advantage of India-UAE CEPA to expand in the WANA region.

With CEPA, the India-UAE trade has grown by 16 per cent to reach 84.5 billion dollars in the fiscal year 2022-23, up from 72.9 billion dollars the previous year.

According to Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India,

CEPA is one of the most ambitious pacts. The depth and range of market access and services it provides is unprecedented, benefitting all stakeholders. India’s exports to the UAE have exceeded $30 billion, with gems and jewellery and plastics deriving benefits from lower priced inputs, he added. “GJEPC has set up IJEX and I see tremendous value in such initiatives. CEPA will accelerate business momentum and is expected to transform the scale and scope of bilateral partnerships.”

Speaking about the launch Vipul Shah, Chairman, GJEPC said that the Gems & Jewellery sector is among the industries that have gained significantly from CEPA. India’s exports in this sector have witnessed an impressive growth of 16.54% to USD 5.77 billion in 2022-23 as compared to previous year.

“I am sure the Indian jewellery industry would make the most of this opportunity and take the exports the gem and jewellery exports to the pre-COVID level of 10 billion dollars to the UAE very soon. With continued support and cooperation, we can take our bilateral trade relations to new heights and achieve greater success,” he said.

Women are flooding social media with pictures that show them in distressed denims to protest against controversial remarks on ripped jeans made by the new Uttarakhand Chief Minister, Tirath Singh Rawat. Mr Rawat made the comments on Tuesday at a workshop organised by the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in Dehradun.

Mr Rawat said that he was on a flight when he came across a woman, accompanied by two children, wearing ripped jeans. The woman told him that she runs an NGO.

The chief minister said he was concerned about the example she was setting for society.

“If this kind of woman goes out in the society to meet people and solve their problems, what kind of message are we giving out to society, to our kids?” the Uttarakhand Chief Minister said.

He expressed his distaste for “bare knees” and asked: “Kaynchi se sanskaar (culture by scissors) – showing bare knees, wearing ripped denim and looking like rich kids – these are the values being given now. Where is this coming from, if not at home?”

The comments sparked an immediate backlash on social media. Congress leader Sanjay Jha was among the first to react. “Wearing “#rippedjeans” destroys our culture, it seems. It leads to substance abuse. And a societal breakdown. Women should strictly avoid this sacrilege against our pristine customs, says Uttarakhand CM,” he tweeted while posting a pic in ripped jeans on Wednesday.

Fashion trends can be bizarre at times. And Italian luxury fashion label Gucci has been mocked for selling “upside down” sunglasses for whooping price 470 euros (Rs 45,800). The Inverted Cat Eye accessory was released earlier this week, offering one-day delivery to customers on the brand’s official website.

However, netizens poked fun at the item’s bizarre design.

“An unconventional take on the ’50s and ’60s inspired cat eye frames, these sunglasses are presented with an inverted design that created an ‘upside down’ effect. The frames and temples are created using multiple layers of black and white acetate. Enamelled floral details and a petite ‘Gucci’ logo further enrich the design,” that’s how Gucci describes the high-ticket product.

In a series of tweets, a user named Porochista Khakpour shared several pictures of the luxury fashion brand selling the sunglasses along with a tweet that read, “Gucci, why are we doing this.”

In the next tweet, she said that though it was understandable that this year has been tough, the product being priced at £470 was not.

Khakpour also shared a picture showing how the brand had styled the sunglasses and added, “Hard no.”

The post quickly went viral on social media, receiving more than 1.3 likes and over 8,900 re-tweets.

Many agreed with Khakpour. And once the post went viral, several Twitter users also trolled the brand for the sunglass design.

https://twitter.com/Oceaney29814759/status/1337448097169883141

“I thought they just turned the glasses upside down for the photo. But no, the ‘inverted eyeglasses’ are an actual product,” wrote a user while sharing the original tweet.

Many people made comparisons to snooker legend Dennis Taylor who was known for wearing specially designed sunglasses “upside down”.

Do you think this could be fashion?

SERIN THANKAM SAM

International Men’s Day is celebrated every year on November 19. The day is observed to commemorate the achievements and contributions of men and boys to the nation society, community, family, marriage and childcare.

International Men’s Day was inaugurated in 1992 on February 7 by Thomas Oaster. In 1999, the event was revived by Jerome Teelucksing. He chose November 19 to acknowledge his father’s birthday and to celebrate how on that date in 1989 Trinidad and Tobago’s football team had united the country with their efforts to qualify for the World Cup.

In India, the inaugural celebration of the day was organized by the leading Indian Men’s rights organisation named Indian Family on 19 November 2007.

And here is a list of some men who broke stereotypes in the fashion scene, encouraging men to think beyond being “manly”. They refused to conform to gender constructs in fashion dictated by the “rules” of masculinity and rewriting what it means to be a “strong man”. These men took mainstream, gendered fashion trends and reversed them so that it is became acceptable for men to wear the kind of clothing that is usually considered ‘feminine’.

Harry Styles

Singer and actor Harry Styles made headlines for his Vogue cover shoot which includes styling that has him wearing a dress. This is nothing new for the star, who is known for not conforming to what was previously considered unacceptable for men’s fashion. Styles has received tons of praise for both his aesthetic sensibilities and his willingness to ignore outdated gender norms. “When you take away ‘There’s clothes for men and there’s clothes for women’, once you remove any barriers, obviously you open up the arena in which you can play,” Harry Styles said while posing for the Vogue magazine. “It’s like anything-anytime you’re putting barriers up in your own life, you’re just limiting yourself.”

Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh, loves experimenting with fashion choices. He took gender roles and fashion norms and neatly tossed them out of the window. He made quite the statement when he stepped out sporting a skirt for an event.

Billy Porter

Speaking of throwing away normative notions of gender, Billy Porter has entirely transcended the fashion for men. From his tuxedo dress in 2019 Oscars to full-on ball gowns on red carpets, he is making a statement with his newfound liberation.

Lauv

Who said mini purses are a trend meant only for ladies? Singer Lauv can definitely carry the trend in an epic way.

Jaden Smith
Hollywood actor Will Smith’s son , Jaden Smith has no limits when it comes to fashion. Jaden has also been photographed several times wearing skirts in fashion spreads.

BTS
The list would be incomplete, without mentioning them. From fancy nail art to wearing items from the women’s collection, there’s nothing stopping popular K-pop band BTS from expressing their artistry and their perspective through the outfits they wear.

The most popular designer in the Indian fashion industry, Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s designs have recently embraced a style statement- fashion with a cause.

The fashion tycoon undertook a mission of designing school uniforms for students at Jaisalmer’s Rajkumari Ratnavati Girl’s School in collaboration with a US-based non-profit organisation called CITTA.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CGTo735BmFP/?utm_source=ig_embed

What particularly catches one’s attention is the block print technique called Ajrakh, used on the uniform , around the skirt and sleeves. Ajrakh is a unique form of block printing, famous in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Ajrakh products are usually made with natural vegetable and mineral dyes. Indigo is a key dye .

Taking to social media, Sabyasachi’s official Instagram handle shared the image of five young girls, smiling and laughing in the blue and red, frock-style designer’s uniform.

This school has been set up as part of an initiative by CITTA, a non-profit organisation founded by American artist Michael Daube. Designed by New York-based architect Diana Kellogg, the school aims to not only educate underprivileged girls but also form a base for women’s skill-building and provide access to independent and meaningful work, as mentioned on its official website.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CGOGl7OpL7V/?utm_source=ig_embed

In another Instagram post, Sabyasachi wrote, “I have always believed in the transformative power of education. Especially dear to me are initiatives that focus their resources on educating girls…So when Michael Daube from Citta approached me to design school uniforms…I was thrilled.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CGTpAWVBk7y/?utm_source=ig_embed

Talking about his creative process, Sabyasachi further wrote, “When designing these outfits, I wanted to make sure they reflected the region’s craft heritage, with the hopes that it would highlight for the young girls the beauty and power inherent to craft, as well as provide a better sense of community, connection, and pride for their home.”

The collaborative project aims at providing education and vocational skills to girls and women and helps them achieve economic independence.

The school is officially slated to open in December 2020.
