1,968 confirmed with COVID-19 in Kerala on Aug. 20; 1,217 cured

COVID-19 was confirmed in 1,968 persons in Kerala on August 20 even as 1,217 patients under treatment for the same have recovered. While there were 1,737 cases of local transmission, the source of infection of 100 was not traceable. Among the total, 71 are returnees from foreign countries and 109 from other states. Forty-eight healthcare workers were also infected by the disease.

Nine deaths were confirmed on the day as due to COVID taking the death toll in the State to 191. Mohanan (68) from Kozhikode district and Mahad (48), Basheer (44), Rajan (84), Krishnankutty Nair (73), Lawrence (69), Mohana Kumaran Nair (58), Mershali (75) & Manikandan (72) from Thiruvananthapuram district are the deceased. Further deaths will be confirmed after subsequent tests at NIV, Alappuzha.

The district-wise numbers of the new active cases are 429 from Thiruvananthapuram district, 356 in Malappuram district, 198 from Alappuzha district, 150 in Ernakulam district, 130 from Kozhikode district, 124 in Kottayam district, 119 from Pathanamthitta district, 91 in Kasaragod district, 86 from Kollam district, 78 in Kannur district, 72 from Thrissur district, 65 in Palakkad district and 35 each from Idukki and Wayanad districts.

The details of those infected through contact are 394 in Thiruvananthapuram district, 328 in Malappuram district, 182 in Alappuzha district, 138 in Ernakulam district, 115 in Kottayam district, 108 in Kozhikode district, 95 in Pathanamthitta district, 79 each in Kollam and Kasargod districts, 67 in Thrissur district, 66 in Kannur district, 34 from Palakkad district, 29 from Idukki district and 23 from Wayanad district.

The infected healthcare workers are 21 in Thiruvananthapuram district, nine in Malappuram district, four each in Ernakulam and Kozhikode districts, three in Kasaragod district, two each in Kollam, Thrissur and Kannur districts, and one in Palakkad district. Three INHS personnel in Ernakulam District are also among those infected with Coronavirus.

The number of patients who tested negative on the day are 230 in Thiruvananthapuram district, 30 from Kollam district, 19 in Pathanamthitta district, 75 from Alappuzha district, 29 in Kottayam district, nine from Idukki district, 121 from Ernakulam district, 35 in Thrissur district, 91 from Palakkad district, 108 in Malappuram district, 257 from Kozhikode district, 24 in Wayanad district, 35 from Kannur district and 154 in Kasaragod district.

So far, 33,828 persons have been cured of COVID in the State while 18,123 patients are still undergoing treatment.

There are currently 1,73,189 people under observation in various districts of the state, 1,58,543 under home or institutional quarantine and 14,646 in hospitals. 2,198 persons were admitted to the hospital today.

There has been an increase in the number of tests being conducted with 37,010 samples being tested in the last 24 hours. A total of 13,12,992 samples have so far been sent for testing, including 1,55,984 samples as part of Sentinel Surveillance of high exposure groups such as health workers, migrant workers and individuals with greater public contact.

Thirty-one new places were declared as hotspots on August 20 and 18 were exempted from the list. There are currently 585 hotspots in Kerala.
