Accusing the Indian government of engaging itself in ‘unfair and discriminatory practices”, the US authorities on June 22 restricted charter flights from India. The US government blamed India for violating a treaty governing aviation between the two countries.
The country’s Transportation Department issued an order that will permit US authorities to look at “charter flights by Indian carriers on a case-by-case basis” according to the US-India Air Transport Agreement. The order becomes effective from July 22.
Under the new order, Indian airlines must apply for permission from the US Department of Transportation before flying charter flights. This action was taken after weeks of restrictions by US Department of Transportation against Chinese airlines for unfairly banning American carriers . On June 15, the US allowed four flights every week from China after the country allowed the same number of US carriers.
