Riyadh: Hail International Airport is set for a major expansion that will boost its annual passenger capacity to over 2.2 million, the Saudi Ministry of Transport and Logistics has announced. The development forms a key part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to modernize air transport infrastructure in the northern region.

Speaking at the Hail Forum during a session on “Investment Opportunities in the Transport and Logistics Sector,” Saud Al-Arifi, Director General of the General Administration of Privatization at the ministry, emphasized that the expansion supports the Kingdom’s goal of transforming Hail into a fully integrated logistics hub.

Currently serving as the main airport for the Hail Province, the facility is used by airlines such as Air Arabia, flynas, and flyadeal. The airport’s strategic location—within 60 minutes of 11 Arab capitals and 200 minutes from Central Europe—makes it an ideal candidate for further development.

In addition to the airport upgrade, the Ministry, in cooperation with the Hail Region Development Authority, is developing a massive logistics centre covering more than 374,000 square meters. This facility will enhance supply chain efficiency and boost cargo movement across Saudi Arabia.

A separate initiative to upgrade roadside services across the region is also underway, aimed at improving road safety and enhancing travel amenities.

Vision 2030: Saudi Arabia’s Aviation and Logistics Overhaul

The Hail airport expansion is part of Saudi Arabia’s larger Vision 2030, a national plan to diversify the economy beyond oil and position the Kingdom as a global leader in logistics, aviation, and tourism.

Key goals under the Saudi Aviation Strategy include:

Passenger Growth: Increase total passenger traffic to 330 million annually by 2030, up from 112 million in 2023.

Cargo Expansion: Grow air cargo volume to 4.5 million tonnes annually.

Global Connectivity: Connect Saudi airports to over 250 international destinations.

Infrastructure Investment: Modernize airports across the Kingdom, including the upcoming King Salman International Airport in Riyadh and the new Abha International Airport.

Airline Development: Launch new carriers like Riyadh Air and NEOM Airlines, joining existing players like Saudia and flynas.

Riyadh Air, backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), is expected to launch in Q3 2025. Its fleet will include 60 Airbus A321neo aircraft and up to 72 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with further discussions ongoing for additional wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 777X.

These developments underscore Saudi Arabia’s commitment to transforming its aviation and logistics sectors into global benchmarks, anchoring the Kingdom’s vision for a diversified and connected future.

Riyadh: The United States has decided to establish nuclear cooperation with Saudi Arabia without establishing relations with Israel. The memorandum of understanding for cooperation will be handed over during US President Donald Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia. The US President will arrive in Saudi Arabia on the 13th of this month.
The US position was that nuclear cooperation would be possible only if Saudi Arabia established diplomatic relations with Israel. After Israel’s Gaza war and genocide caused outrage in the Arab world, Saudi Arabia had informed the US that cooperation with Israel would not be possible. In return, Saudi Arabia will provide a trillion-dollar investment to the US. In addition to nuclear cooperation, Saudi Arabia will also receive defense weapons. Huge packages will be available during Trump’s visit next week. Saudi Arabia’s goals are to generate electricity using nuclear energy and reduce carbon emissions. Israel is concerned that Saudi Arabia, like Iran, will develop nuclear weapons. According to reports, US officials will be at plants in Saudi Arabia to monitor this. The US also saw it as a challenge that Saudi Arabia would move towards cooperation with China, Russia, South Korea, and France if the US did not provide it.

RIYADH: Flynas, one of the region’s leading low-cost airlines, is preparing for a high-profile debut on the Saudi Tadawul stock exchange. As part of its initial public offering, the airline will float 30% of its capital, with 20% reserved for retail investors. The institutional book-building phase wraps up by May 18, while retail subscription opens on May 28. Final share allocation is expected by June 3, with the exact listing date to be announced soon.

This IPO not only marks another major listing in the Kingdom’s capital markets, but also puts the spotlight back on the Gulf’s booming aviation industry. With its extensive network spanning 72 destinations, flynas transported 10.9 million passengers in the first nine months of 2024 alone.

The airline continues to grow its fleet with a robust order of 30 Airbus A330neo and 130 A320neo aircraft. Financially, flynas is cruising steadily, posting revenues of SR434 million in 2024’s first nine months, up from SR401 million in the same period a year earlier. In 2023, annual revenues had soared past SR7.5 billion.

RIYADH: The move follows a failed recruitment attempt from Neom and a subsequent freeze on advisory contracts with the Kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), putting PwC’s lucrative consultancy operations in jeopardy.

In an urgent bid to mend strained ties with Saudi Arabia, PwC has announced the departure of several senior board members in its Middle East division. Among those stepping down are Mohamed ElBorno, head of assurance, and Emma Campbell, in charge of partner affairs—both long-standing figures in the firm. More exits may be on the horizon, insiders suggest.

The fallout traces back to PwC’s attempt to poach Jason Davies, Neom’s former chief internal audit officer, which irked Saudi authorities. The kingdom responded in February with a one-year ban on new advisory contracts with PwC, although auditing services remain unaffected. This comes at a time when PwC’s Middle East unit is booming—recording a 26% rise in sales last year, far surpassing UK growth figures.
Saudi Arabia’s push for Saudisation through its Nitaqat programme is also reshaping the landscape for international consultancies. Firms are now under pressure to localise talent and reduce reliance on foreign hires.

PwC’s troubles strike a nerve not only because of lost contracts with PIF—whose assets touch nearly a trillion dollars and span global giants like Uber and Meta—but also because it risks losing ground in one of the world’s fastest-growing advisory markets. Gulf spending on external consultancy is expected to jump 12% this year, more than double the growth forecast for the US.

PwC had acquired its regional business for £15 million in 2009, and it has since become a cornerstone of its global operations. But in a region where relationships are everything, the firm now finds itself in damage control mode.

Riyadh: Budget carrier flynas celebrated the launch of its new direct flight route connecting Riyadh and Abu Dhabi late last week.

From April 10, flynas have been operating three weekly flights between King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Shaikh Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Passengers on the inaugural departing flight were greeted with special giveaways.
flynas now stands as the only Saudi Arabian carrier serving all four major airports in the UAE with direct flights from its main hubs in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Madinah.

This expansion into the UAE market aligns with flynas’ ambitious growth strategy, “We Connect the World to the Kingdom,” and supports Saudi Arabia’s National Civil Aviation Strategy’s goals of connecting the Kingdom with 250 international destinations, accommodating 330 million passengers, and hosting 150 million tourists annually by 2030. The initiative also contributes to the Pilgrims Experience Program (PEP) by facilitating access to the Two Holy Mosques.

An inaugural ceremony was held at King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) in Riyadh to commemorate the maiden direct flight between the Saudi and Emirati capitals. Representatives from flynas and Riyadh Airports Company, the operator of KKIA, attended the event. This new route further solidifies flynas’ position as the largest air carrier connecting the two nations, now offering more than 20 daily flights.
The airline operates 139 routes to over 70 domestic and international destinations across 30 countries, with more than 1,500 weekly flights. Since its inception in 2007, flynas has carried over 80 million passengers and aims to reach 165 domestic and international destinations as part of its growth and expansion plan, which aligns with Saudi Vision 2030.

Riyadh : The agreements, signed at the Oman Pavilion, represent a major milestone for Oman’s growing tech sector, highlighting the nation’s commitment to expanding its presence in the global tech ecosystem.

The agreements involved both public and private sector companies, with key representatives from the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT), including His Excellency Dr. Ali Amer Al Shidhani, Undersecretary for Communications and Information Technology, present at the event.

Among the major deals, Global Semiconductor & Microelectronics (GSME), an Omani company founded through international collaboration, secured a $10 million agreement with Saudi company e-Photonics. This deal aims to promote cooperation in semiconductors, electronics, and 3D computer vision solutions, focusing on knowledge exchange and joint research and development.

Another agreement was signed between Omani tech company DataMining and Saudi firm AlJazeera Falcons, valued at approximately $1 million. This partnership will focus on software development, artificial intelligence, and electronic product production tailored for the Saudi market.

The Oman Information and Communications Technology Group (ITHCA) also saw success at the event, with several of its member companies signing key deals. Mubasher, a digital advertising solutions provider, secured a $1 million agreement with Saudi company OOMCO; OSOS, an ITHCA member, signed six agreements related to software systems, artificial intelligence, cloud solutions, and technical support with international companies.

With a total value of $12 million in agreements on the first two days alone, Oman’s participation in LEAP 2025 has proven to be a significant step forward in establishing the Sultanate as a hub for innovation and technological development in the region.

The LEAP 2025 conference, running from February 9-12, 2025, has gathered over 1,800 exhibitors, including 630 emerging tech companies, and is recognized as one of the largest and most prominent tech events in the Middle East. Oman’s pavilion, organised by MTCIT for the third consecutive year, features 47 companies, including 37 Omani tech startups, and is a key platform for showcasing Oman’s digital solutions and promoting investment opportunities.

RIYADH: His Highness Sayyid Faisal bin Turki bin Mahmoud Al Said, Oman’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia has completed the term of his diplomatic mission in the country.

His Highness Sayyid Faisal was appointed as the Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its Permanent Representative to the Islamic Cooperation Organisation in December 2020 through a Royal Decree No 2020/129 by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.
On Wednesday, His Excellency Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Saudi Arabia received Sayyid Fasial to bid farewell on the occasion of the end of his term as Ambassador.

His Excellency Adel Al Jubeir appreciated the good efforts made by His Highness Sayyid Faisal in strengthening relations between the two countries.

Data released by National Centre for Statistics and Information shows a significant rise in trade between the two nations. Omani non-oil exports to Saudi Arabia have doubled since 2020, reaching over RO1bn at the end of 2023. This increase is attributed to growth in exports of mineral products, machinery, electrical equipment and food products.

RIYADH: Arab and Muslim leaders have begun arriving in Saudi Arabia for a summit scheduled for Monday that will focus on Israel’s wars in Gaza and Lebanon, Saudi state media said.

The Saudi foreign ministry announced the summit in late October during the first meeting of an “international alliance” pushing for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Attendees will “discuss the continued Israeli aggression on the Palestinian territories and the Lebanese Republic, and the current developments in the region,” the official Saudi Press Agency said on Sunday.

It comes one year after a similar gathering in Riyadh of the Cairo-based Arab League and the Jeddah-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) during which leaders condemned Israeli forces’ actions in Gaza as “barbaric”.
The Saudi state-affiliated Al Ekhbariya news channel broadcast footage on Sunday of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati landing in Riyadh.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was also scheduled to attend, the Pakistani foreign ministry said last week, adding that he planned to call for “an immediate end to the genocide in Gaza” and the “immediate cessation of the ongoing Israeli adventurism in the region”.

The 57-member OIC and 22-member Arab League include countries which recognise Israel and those firmly opposed to its regional integration.

Last year’s summit in Riyadh saw disagreement on measures like severing economic and diplomatic ties with Israel and disrupting its oil supplies.
The war in Gaza erupted with Hamas’s unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, which resulted in 1,206 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed more than 43,600 people in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to data from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry that the United Nations considers reliable.

Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which like Hamas is backed by Iran, began firing on Israel after the October 7 attack. The regular cross-border exchanges escalated in late September when Israel intensified its air strikes before sending ground troops into southern Lebanon against Hezbollah.

Cairo: The current school holiday in Saudi Arabia has significantly boosted occupancy rates at Riyadh hotels, driving prices to unprecedented levels, according to booking observers.

Millions of students are currently enjoying a vacation at the end of the first semester, which runs through November 17. The holiday, which began on Thursday, has given a significant boost to the hotel business in Riyadh, where an annual entertainment and tourist festival is underway.
Room costs have reached SR7,000 per night, especially at five-star hotels in central Riyadh, according to the Saudi news portal Sabq, citing booking websites.

Occupancy rates at some central Riyadh hotels and those near the airport have reached 100%, while overall citywide occupancy is at 76%.
Prices for apartments and suites, which are not classified on hotel booking sites, have reached between SR8,000 and SR12,000 per day. This boom coincides with the fifth edition of the annual Riyadh Season.
The Saudi tourism sector has set a record after opening 12,000 hotel rooms, the highest in the world.

The kingdom’s tourism industry is thriving due to government initiatives to attract more visitors. The number of tourists in the kingdom surged to over 100 million last year.

Saudi Tourism Minister Ahmed Al Khateeb stated earlier this year that the kingdom’s tourism sector in 2023 achieved its target of 100 million tourists, including 77 million domestic visitors and 27 million international arrivals.

He cited a strategy outlined by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which envisions attracting 150 million tourists annually by 2030, including 80 million domestic tourists and 70 million international arrivals.

Riyadh: Aramco held its quarterly dividend at $31 billion, despite lower profit, as Saudi Arabia’s multitrillion-dollar economic transformation plans widen the budget deficit.

The company, majority owned by the Saudi state, is keeping the world’s biggest payout despite increasing signs of stress on earnings. The outlook for oil has darkened with concerns over demand, but the dividend is key for the government’s finances.

The test for how long the payout can be maintained will likely come early next year, when a special component that amounts to $43 billion a year is scheduled to start shrinking. Aramco is already paying out more than it’s earning, which is putting pressure on the balance-sheet with production near the lowest levels since 2021 and oil prices declining 13% in the past four months.

Aramco’s net income fell 15% to $27.6 billion in the quarter ended September compared with a year earlier, according to a statement. That missed analysts estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Free cash flow – money from operations after capital expenditure – of $21.99 billion was lower than the total dividend.

The payout is crucial for the Saudi budget as crude prices remain far below the levels the kingdom needs to balance spending. Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman is pushing ahead with ventures such as the futuristic project of Neom, but some plans – including Aramco’s own chemical plants – are being dialed back because of funding issues.

The government directly owns more than 81% stake and the sovereign wealth fund another 16%.

Saudi Arabia has kept its output at about 9 million barrels a day for over a year as part of OPEC+’s efforts to revive the market. The group has further delayed a plan to gradually unwind the cutbacks, as crude prices continue to struggle amid a fragile economic outlook.

Dubai: Saudi Arabia’s new national airline, Riyadh Air, plans to place an order next year for wide-body aircraft that can accommodate over 300 passengers, as revealed by its chief financial officer, in a report by news service AFP.

This order would mark the airline’s third, following its establishment last year and the anticipated launch of its first flights in summer 2025.

Riyadh Air announced a multi-billion-dollar agreement to acquire 60 narrow-body Airbus A321neo aircraft, which brings its total aircraft orders to 132.

This total includes a previous contract with Boeing for 39 wide-body Dreamliner 787-9s, which can seat just under 300 passengers, along with options for an additional 33 jets.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman views aviation as a crucial element of his Vision 2030 reform initiative aimed at diversifying the oil-reliant economy.
The goal is to increase annual passenger traffic to 330 million by the end of the decade.

By 2030, Riyadh Air aims to operate 100 routes, expanding to over 120 by 2035, though specific routes have yet to be disclosed.

The airline announced the establishment of its first revolving credit facility, which can reach up to $1.3 billion (Dh4.7 billion), with backing from eight financial institutions across Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region.
