Kozhikode, Malappuram and Thrissur reported the most cases – 851, 721 and 525 respectively. The test positivity rate in Kerala has risen slightly to 11.34. According to this data, for every 100 people tested in the state, 11 are likely to test positive for the virus.

The district wise distribution of positive cases are: Kozhikode – 851, Malappuram – 721, Thrissur – 525, Ernakulam – 512, Kollam – 426, Kottayam – 399, Palakkad – 349, Alappuzha – 381, Thiruvananthapuram – 370, Kannur – 277, Idukki – 274, Pathanamthitta – 244, Wayanad – 147 and Kasaragod – 122.

Of the new cases, 4,951 had contracted the virus through contact. The infection sources of 571 contact cases remain unclear. Local transmission was severe in Kozhikode, Malappuram and Thrissur district.

Twenty-seven new COVID deaths were confirmed. COVID death toll in the state now stands at 2,223.

Thirty-four more healthworkers tested positive for the virus. They include eight from Thiruvananthapuram, five from Kannur, four each from Ernakulam and Thrissur, three from Kozhikode, two each from Palakkad and Wayanad, and one each from Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram and Kasaragod.

In the last 24 hours, 49,775 samples have been tested. In total, 62,27,787 samples were sent for testing.

A total of 3,15,497 people are under observation across the state. Of them, 2,99,601 are under home or institutional quarantine while 15,896 are in hospital. A total of 1,840 people were admitted in hospitals on Sunday.

Two regions were designated as hotspots while eight were removed from the list. The total number of hotspots in the state is at 524.

There are 66,856 active coronavirus cases in Kerala. As many as 3,18,079 are under observation. Among them, 3,01,749 are in home/institutional quarantine while 16,330 are in hospitals. 1,846 were admitted to hospitals on November 21.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has emphasised on the need for the Universities and government-aided colleges to obtain a higher NAAC grading as only such institutions were eligible for funds from the Central Government under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).

Inaugurating 47 different building projects that were completed at various institutions of higher learning in the State, the Chief Minister said: “These projects were commissioned as part of the Government’s commitment to improving the basic infrastructure and the standard of the higher education sector in the state while ensuring social justice. About Rs 64 crores were spent on these projects spread across the State. The projects include world-class standard buildings, smart classrooms, labs, libraries, hostels for girl students, solar energy labs, incubation centres and community skill centres. Several other similar projects are also being completed at the institutions of higher learning and at Universities. At present, only 29 government colleges have NAAC accreditation and the numbers have to be increased. This is the reason why the government is improving the basic infrastructure and the study environment at the higher educational institutions in the State.”

These projects include one each at CUSAT, Kannur, MG and Calicut Universities, nine institutions under IHRD, three Community Skill Parks under ASAP, 15 Government Arts & Science Colleges under the Education Department; two Engineering Colleges, three Polytechnic Colleges and five Technical high schools under the Technical Education Department.

The Chief Minister also informed that a state-level quality assurance cell has been set up under the Department of Higher Education. KIIFB funding has been sanctioned for projects worth Rs.700 crores for the infrastructure development and academic development of colleges.

For the second day in a row, more than 8,000 people were confirmed with COVID-19 on October 1 in Kerala. With 8,135 people newly infected, the number of patients under treatment reached 72,339. Of those detected, 7,013 are cases of infection through contact and the source was unknown for 730 cases. A total of 105 healthcare workers were among those infected. At the same time, 2,828 patients have recovered from the disease.

A total of 72, 339 people were under treatment in various hospitals in the State. The total number of infected in the State crossed two lakhs, the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, 29 deaths were confirmed as due to COVID. The deceased were Abraham (62), Sharmila (52), Velayudha Kurup (92), Mohanan Nair (75), Sudhakaran Das (61), Sukumaran (73), Hashir (45), Vijayakumaran (61) and Rajan (82) from Thiruvananthapuram district; Thankamma (67), Mohanan (62) and Salim (55) from Kollam district, Manoharan (60) from Alappuzha district; K P Mohanan (62), K A Krishnan (59), Alphonsa (57), Riski Androoduram (67), Vishwambharan (92), Nabeesa (73), Kunjumon (57) and K P George (85) from Ernakulam district; Abdul Rahman (55), Balaraman (53), Bhaskaran (85), Laila (56) and Lizzie (70) from Thrissur district, and B K Khalid (64), Kumaran (62) and Khadeejumma (90) from Kasargod district. This takes the COVID related death toll in the state to 771.

Of the confirmed cases, 67 have come back from foreign countries and 218 from other States.

The numbers of the infected healthcare workers district-wise were Thiruvananthapuram 29, Kannur 26, Ernakulam 16, Kottayam 8, Kasaragod 6; Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode and Wayanad 5 each, Malappuram 2, and Kollam, Alappuzha and Palakkad one each. Two INHS personnel in Ernakulam district were also infected by Coronavirus.

The district-wise figures of the patients who tested negative were Thiruvananthapuram 363, Kollam 213, Pathanamthitta 82, Alappuzha 191, Kottayam 148, Idukki 70, Ernakulam 226, Thrissur 290, Palakkad 113, Malappuram 322, Kozhikode 333, Wayanad 59, Kannur 129 and Kasaragod 289. So far, 1,31,052 people have recovered from COVID in the State.

There were currently a total of 2,43,107 persons under observation in various districts of the state, 2,12,849 under home or institutional quarantine and 30,258 in hospitals. 3,150 people were admitted to hospitals.

A total of 59,157 samples were tested during the last 24 hours. Till now, a total of 29,85,534 samples have been sent for testing, including 2,05,349 samples from priority groups as part of Sentinel Surveillance.

Fourteen hotspots were declared on the day while 18 areas were excluded from the list. There are now 656 hotspots in Kerala.

The Chief Minister said that many youngsters are testing positive in the state. The COVID-19 death rate among Kerala youth is just 0.1 percent. However, overconfidence may cause adverse results, CM said.

“We can identify patients who have symptoms. But it is impossible to identify COVID-19 patients who are asymptomatic. Hence, the government is warning that one can contract the virus from anyone around us. We may contract the virus from markets, places of employment, vehicles, hospitals and other public places.

Earlier ,the Kerala Government had made Covid-19 negative certificates mandatory from June 25,for those returning to the state from abroad.There has been widespread opposition to the government’s move which forced them to look for alternatives. The state government had defended its decision saying the certificate has been mandatory due to the high percentage of people returning from abroad testing positive for coronavirus.

Kerala’s proposal to provide TrueNat machines at West Asian airports was dismissed by the Center for its impracticality.Countries like Oman,Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have also said that it was impossible to conduct the tests in the current situation.Over 40 flights ,with over 35,000 expatriates ,are expected to land in the last week of June alone as part of the third phase of the Vande Bharat Mission.
