Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: With a noticeable rise in Covid-19 cases across Kerala, Health Minister Veena George has urged the public to exercise heightened caution, particularly when it comes to the elderly and individuals with underlying health conditions, as they remain most vulnerable to severe illness.

In a statement, the minister confirmed that the dominant circulating variants in Kerala are the Omicron JN.1 sub-lineages LF.7 and XFG, which, though not highly severe, pose a significant risk of rapid transmission.

“Masks should be worn in public places and while travelling. Although these variants are not as severe, their high transmissibility calls for strict preventive measures,” said Veena George. “Genomic sequencing is actively being conducted to monitor the spread and mutation of the virus.”

Rising Case Numbers and Regional Breakdown

As of the latest update, Kerala has 2,223 active Covid-19 cases, with 96 individuals undergoing treatment, many of whom have coexisting medical conditions. The districts with the highest caseloads are:

Ernakulam – 431 cases

Kottayam – 426 cases

Thiruvananthapuram – 365 cases

Hospitals have been directed to prioritize testing for individuals showing symptoms such as cold, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath. All medical institutions must ensure the availability of oxygen, and avoid unnecessary referrals to private hospitals.

Preventive Measures and Public Health Guidelines

Minister George emphasized the importance of continuing basic Covid-19 precautions:

Wearing masks in public areas and mandatorily in hospitals

Avoiding non-essential visits to healthcare facilities

Frequent hand hygiene using soap or sanitiser

She recently chaired a meeting with the Rapid Response Team (RRT) to assess the preparedness of the state’s health infrastructure and monitor the evolving situation.

National Context and Variant Surveillance

Across India, 6,815 active Covid-19 cases have been reported. According to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), 163 cases of the XFG variant have been detected nationwide.

Former ICMR Director General Dr. Balram Bhargava noted that the emergence of such variants is part of the natural evolution of the virus. He assured that India is well-equipped to detect and respond swiftly, thanks to tools like the Truenat molecular diagnostic platform.

Kochi: Leading integrated healthcare provider Aster DM Healthcare has announced its plan to invest around ₹850 cr in Kerala in the next 3 years towards scaling up its infrastructure, medical services, and employment generation. The commitment builds on the ₹500 cr Aster has already invested in Kerala during the last 3 years.
The additional investment plan aligns with the state’s efforts to attract and facilitate high-impact investments under the ‘Invest Kerala Global Summit’ initiative being held in Kochi. Dr Azad Moopen, Founder and Chairman, and Anoop Moopen, Director at Aster DM Healthcare, met Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and P Rajeev, Minister of Law, Industries, and Coir, to discuss the current healthcare landscape and explore opportunities for growth and innovation.

Aster, in a statement, said it has an aggressive investment plan in Kerala that will result in a significant increase in bed capacity, bringing the total number of hospital beds in the state to 3,453 by FY27. Aster currently operates seven hospitals in Kerala, with a total capacity of 2,635 beds, contributing to 53% of the company’s India revenue (9M FY25).
Aster DM Healthcare’s expansion in the state will be driven by two greenfield projects that are coming up, namely Aster Capital Trivandrum with a 454-bed facility and Aster MIMS Kasaragod with 264 beds. The flagship hospital, Aster Medcity, will expand to 962 beds by FY27 as well. In Q3FY25, 100 beds were added to Aster Medcity’s existing capacity, further cementing Aster’s leadership in Kerala’s healthcare sector.
Participating in the Invest Kerala Global Summit 2025, Dr Azad Moopen said, “The ‘Invest Kerala Global Summit’ is a pivotal initiative that underscores the state’s potential as a hub for high-impact investments, and we are proud to be a part of this transformative journey. We plan to invest an additional ₹850cr in the next 3 years to further strengthen Kerala’s healthcare landscape.
Kochi: Kerala is set to transform into a major investment hub, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said at the Global Investors Summit 2025 in Kochi.

Addressing global investors, policymakers, and industry experts, he highlighted Kerala’s evolving investment landscape and the state’s efforts to build an investor-friendly environment.

He said, “Kerala is a state renowned for its natural beauty and has been an attraction for tourists from within the country and abroad. Kerala’s investment scenario is on the cusp of history. We are witnessing progress and change for the better in our investment arena.”

He added, “It is at this juncture that this Summit is taking place, bringing together global investors, visionaries in the field, experts and policymakers aiming to explore the investment potential of Kerala and witness our initiatives towards building an investor-friendly architecture in the state. The changes we have brought about now are not incremental but substantial.”

He emphasized the government’s role in creating a favourable investment climate, stating that Kerala’s policies are designed not just for short-term gains but for long-term economic transformation.
“Kerala has become a noteworthy example of achieving a high score in human development indicators, is now taking a leap towards achieving the status of an investment hub. The government here considers that it has a great role to play as a facilitator and a catalyst. We have taken a holistic view and are paying equal attention to all matters from policy formulation to the last mile implementation,” he added.

Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary, who also spoke at the event, stressed the importance of stability and long-term policy vision for investors.
He praised Kerala for its focus on education and skill development, which he described as critical factors in attracting global investments.

“People want the rule of law. People want rule-abiding citizenry, respect for the law, and respect for rules, and they want long-term visibility. Our Prime Minister is perhaps the best in goal setting. It is not just about the size and scale of announcements getting made,” Chaudhary said.

He urged investors to take note of Kerala’s commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce, which is crucial for industries such as technology, manufacturing, and services.
“No longer can India be considered a back office. India is where the heart of innovation is beating and thriving, and that’s where I invite you to pay attention to how Kerala has always been investing in educating and skilling its younger people. There’s a recent report that says that the highest spending on higher education is happening in Kerala across all the states,” Chaudhary said.

Kochi: Kerala is making all-out efforts to retain its ‘top achiever’ recognition in ease of doing business from the Centre this year. To this end, the state has implemented several measures aimed at creating an industry-friendly environment in preparation for the upcoming ‘Invest Kerala’ global summit, scheduled for February 21-22 in Kochi. Additionally, all documents related to the reforms have been uploaded to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) website.
The next step involves submitting details about the entrepreneurs who have invested this year, with feedback to be gathered from approximately 100 investors in Delhi. To secure favourable marks, at least 70 per cent of the businesspersons must respond positively to Kerala’s efforts. Of the total score, 70 per cent will be based on entrepreneurs’ experiences with online services, while the remaining 30 per cent will be determined after verifying the authenticity of the submitted documents.
The state expedited its efforts last month after the Chief Secretary convened a meeting with various department secretaries following delays in implementing reform action points, giving stern instructions to ensure timely completion. Although the procedure must be finalised by March 15, the feedback from entrepreneurs must also be collected by then.
According to the Centre’s guidelines, states must implement reforms in 26 business sectors and 435 regulatory measures. Kerala has already completed most of these reforms, with the Local Self-Government Department and Department of Factories and Boilers handling the majority of them.
States that implement at least 90 per cent of the required reforms will be placed in the ‘top achiever’ category, with rankings expected to be announced in late May. Last year, Kerala secured the top rank after leading in nine reform categories.

Thiruvananthapuram: Amid rising complaints from the public about being duped in a massive fake Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund scam, estimated to exceed Rs 10 billion, Kerala State Police Chief (SPC) Sheikh Darvesh Sahib has handed over the investigation to the Crime Branch.

The decision, taken after extensive consultations, was announced on Monday.

The probe will be led by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) H. Venkatesh, with separate teams being formed in all 14 districts of the state to handle the mounting complaints.

Initially, 34 cases have been transferred to the Crime Branch. However, early scrutiny of bank accounts linked to the NGO ‘Muvattupuzha Socio-Economic Development Society’ and the alleged mastermind, 26-year-old Anandhu Krishnan, suggests the number of cases could exceed 30,000, as nearly 100,000 individuals are believed to have fallen victim to the scam.

Krishnan lured victims by promising them products such as scooters, laptops, and sewing machines at half the market price. His promotional campaigns convinced many to invest their hard-earned money in what seemed like a lucrative deal.

The scam has also implicated political figures across Kerala’s three major political fronts – the ruling CPI(M)-led Left, the Congress-led UDF, and the BJP – following reports that several leaders received funds from Krishnan.

On Monday, first-time Congress MLA Mathew Kuzhalnaden strongly denied allegations aired by a Malayalam TV channel that he had collected Rs 700,000 from Krishnan. Expressing outrage, Kuzhalnaden stated in the Kerala Assembly that he would take legal action against the channel.

“My only connection with this case was when a party colleague told me that he and a few others had deposited money but had not received their promised goods. I contacted Krishnan and asked him to either refund the money or deliver the goods. Later, all the money was returned,” Kuzhalnaden clarified.

Krishnan’s police custody ends on Monday, and with the initial round of questioning and evidence collection completed, authorities have decided not to seek an extension. He will now be remanded to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Sai Trust chairman K.N. Anand Kumar, a well-known social figure from the state capital, is also under scrutiny due to his association with Krishnan. Denying any wrongdoing, Anand Kumar stated, “I have not disappeared. All donations received have been properly accounted for and have undergone due legal processes.”

Former Kerala High Court Judge C.N. Ramachandran Nair has also been named in one case, a move he strongly contested. Denying any involvement, he stated that he was never a patron of Krishnan’s organisation and had merely served as an advisor before resigning from the post.

Investigations have revealed that Krishnan enjoyed a lavish lifestyle, spending Rs 338,000 on air travel to Delhi and back and Rs 366,000 on luxury hotel stays in December alone. Authorities have also identified 21 different bank accounts linked to Krishnan and his organisations.

With the Crime Branch now leading the probe, attention is focused on whether the investigation will implicate political leaders who had publicly endorsed Krishnan’s activities.

The Adani Group will raise INR 71.48 billion ($833 million) by selling up to 20 per cent stake in Mumbai-listed Adani Wilmar Ltd. as it exits non-core activities to focus on the bread-and-butter infrastructure businesses.

The shares will be divested through a so-called offer-for-sale window of the stock exchanges at a floor price of INR 275 rupees apiece, the company said in a stock exchange filing Thursday.

Adani Commodities LLP, one of the founders of the company, will sell 175.45 million shares or a 13.5 per cent stake, with a greenshoe option to offer another 84.5 million shares or 6.5 per cent, the filing said.

The issue was fully subscribed on Friday — the first day of the share sale reserved for institutional investors and wealthy individuals – getting 111 per cent bids at 4.15 pm in Mumbai, according to exchange data. It continues on January 13 for retail buyers.
Adani Wilmar shares slumped 10 per cent — the most since November — to close at 291.10 rupees, pushing the past year’s decline to 21 per cent.

This is the first phase of the port-to-power conglomerate’s exit from the joint venture in which it holds 44 per cent. In the second phase, Singapore’s Wilmar International Ltd. has agreed to acquire the residual stake at a price not exceeding 305 rupees.

After the transactions, the Gautam Adani-led conglomerate will fully exit the firm and use the proceeds to bolster its core infrastructure ventures that include airports and renewable energy.

The stake sale is happening amid legal challenges faced by Adani in the US, where federal prosecutors have alleged that the Indian billionaire was part of a bribery scheme to win solar energy contracts in India. Rating agencies cited that as a potential risk to fund raising for the group, and placed multiple Adani firms on negative watch.
Adani Wilmar was slated to start a share sale last year to comply with a local securities law that requires at least 25 per cent of the holding to be with public shareholders within three years of listing.

The company listed in 2022 and has until February to meet the rule. Bloomberg reported in August 2023 that Adani Enterprises was exploring selling a stake sale in its consumer-staple joint venture for freeing up capital for core business.
