A total of 585 people succumbed to the deadly virus, taking the overall fatalities to 1,31,578. However the country’s new deaths per million due to coronavirus disease in the past seven days has continued to remain the lowest in the world.

The total active cases stand at 4,43,303 after a decrease of 3,502 in the last 24 hours.
The total discharged cases are at 83,83,603 with 48,493 new recoveries in the last 24 hours.

For the 12th day today, India has reported less than 50,000 daily coronavirus cases. According to Health ministry, the recovery rate now stands at 93.58%.

The Indian Council of Medical Research said that a total of 12,85,08,389 samples have been tested for Covid-19 up to 18 November. Of these, 10,28,203 samples were tested yesterday, the ICMR added.

As covid-19 cases and death continues to rise in Delhi , Tata group in collaboration with Apollo group of hospitals launched an indigenous testing kit based on the gene-editing technology CRISPR called Feluda.

The test is likely to be cheaper than the current gold standard RT-PCR and equally accurate, helping in scaling up Covid-19 testing as it would need a machine that is widely available with laboratories and science institutions.

The global infection tally has gone up to 56,187,563 with the United States continuing to report the maximum number of Covid-19 cases at 11,525,540. The virus has claimed 1,348,600 lives across the globe, according to Johns Hopkins University’s tracker.

Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine producer, has said it has made 40 million doses of AstraZeneca’s potential COVID-19 vaccine, and will soon begin making Novavax’s rival shot.

Earlier ICMR and SII have further collaborated for the clinical development of development of COVOVAX, developed by American company Novavax and upscaled by SII.

SII said it has enrolled 1,600 participants in India for late-stage trials of AstraZeneca’s candidate, and also plans to seek regulatory approval to run late-stage trials for Novavax vaccine.

Covishield is the AstraZeneca-Oxford University COVID-19 vaccine candidate and is the most advanced in human testing in India. SII and ICMR is planning to pursue early availability of the shot in India.

The ICMR had funded the clinical trial site fees for Covishield. SII and ICMR are currently conducting mid-stage clinical trials of the shot at 15 centres across India.

The two frontrunner coronavirus vaccines developed by Pfizer Inc and Russia have shown positive results and are said to be effective by over 90% against COVID-19. Now Moderna is also getting closer to releasing the data on its late-stage trials of the corona vaccine candidate.

Meanwhile, in India, experts have said that Pfizer news may not be of much use in India as the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine needs storage at extreme cold temperature (-70 degree Celsius) and arranging such cold chains would be a huge logistical issue.

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in India now stands at 76,51,108 and the death toll has reached 1,15,914.

India also witnessed a dip of 8448 in its active cases in the last 24 hours. As of Wednesday morning, there are 7,40,090 active cases of coronavirus in India.

For the fifth consecutive day, the active cases of coronavirus remained below 8 lakh in India.

India has a recovery rate of 88.8 percent. Six states – Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal- account for 64 percent of the country’s total active cases.

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 9,72,00,379 samples have been tested up to October 20 with 10,83,608 samples being tested on Tuesday (October 20).

However, a top ICMR official warned that a person may get reinfected with Covid-19 if the antibodies against the infection diminish in the body in five months’ time after recovery.

Officials at the World Health Organisation reiterated the importance of adhering to quarantine rules for those who test positive and those who have come in contact with a positive case, as Europe faces a surge in numbers.

Globally, the infections have topped 40.2 million, with over 1.1 million deaths. Soaring cases in US battleground states pose a challenge for President Donald Trump two weeks before the election.
