‘Sultanate of Oman: Jewel of Arabia’ expedition highlights biodiversity and sustainable tourism

MUSCAT : The expedition, which began early this month in the Wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, will continue for 30 days, passing through North Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta, and finally reaching the Dhofar Governorate. It aims to showcase Oman’s vast biodiversity, diverse ecosystems, and deep connection to sustainable development. The journey involves participants from both Oman and the United Kingdom, traveling through a variety of traditional and modern means of transport.

Mark Evans, the team leader of the expedition, explained that the initiative aims to promote Oman’s biodiversity both locally and internationally, while highlighting the Sultanate’s progress in sustainable innovations such as green hydrogen. He stressed that the journey is an excellent opportunity for young Omanis working in sustainability to explore Oman’s environmental richness.

The expedition will introduce participants to nature reserves, wild animals and the best types of Omani frankincense that are unique to the Dhofar Governorate.

The expedition features six key participants, including Dhikra Al Maawali, the first Omani female explorer certified by National Geographic, and Ibrahim Al Hasani, a trainer at Oman Challenge. The group also includes Nigel Haring, an expert in flight risk management, Anna Maria, an internationally recognized professional photographer from Switzerland, and Albi from the Badir Foundation. Their diverse skills contribute to the expedition’s efficiency, helping the team discover the route and arrive on time.

One of the participants, Ibrahim Al Hasani, highlighted the challenges posed by the journey’s rugged terrain, including mountainous areas and sea riding. Despite these obstacles, he believes the trip will further emphasize Oman’s appeal as a unique tourist destination, rich in both cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The expedition will also provide an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of preserving Oman’s natural and cultural heritage, offering participants a deeper understanding of the value of ecological and sustainable tourism.
