A rare lunar event is going to happen this year during Halloween, as a blue moon will grace the skies when people celebrate spookiness. The blue moon will offer a perfect treat for skywatchers and people, as it will help them to navigate their adventurous night journey in the moonlight.
Most of the people believe that the moon will turn blue during this lunar event. However, this is absolutely incorrect, as the moon will not change its color during the Halloween full moon. It got the name blue moon, as it is going to be the second full moon in a month.
On their website, NASA narrates an interesting story behind the origin of the term blue moon, and it happened more than a century ago.
“The term Blue Moon is believed to have originated in 1883 after the eruption of Krakatoa. The volcano put so much dust in the atmosphere that the Moon actually looked blue in color. This was so unusual that the term “once in a Blue Moon” was coined,” wrote NASA on their website.
Space experts reveal that seven blue moons used to hit the skies in 19 years. Apart from being the second full moon in a month, this lunar event does not have much significance. The next blue moon will grace the skies on August 31, 2023, while the next Halloween moon will appear in 2039.
As the entire humanity is battling the coronavirus pandemic during this Halloween, these days could turn out to be scarier than never before, and the presence of a full moon is expected to light up the darkness.
