Ramadan 2025: Saudi drive urges pilgrims to conserve water

Cairo: The Saudi government has launched a high-profile campaign urging pilgrims visiting the kingdom during Ramadan to conserve water.

The campaign, led by the National Centre for Water Efficiency and Conservation in collaboration with government agencies and non-profit organizations, is titled “We Live by Water, and We Are Rewarded by Preserving It.” It aims to raise awareness among pilgrims and visitors to the Two Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina about the importance of water conservation.
Awareness materials highlighting conservation solutions and optimal water usage will be displayed on mobile and fixed screens in Mecca and Medina. Additionally, information kits will be distributed at hospitality facilities, and social media campaigns will encourage pilgrims to reduce water waste.

Ramadan, expected to end on March 29 this year, marks the peak season for Umrah at the Grand Mosque. Saudi authorities have urged worshippers to follow guidelines for using the sacred Zamzam water, limiting it to drinking only.

The Saudi General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques has advised visitors to adhere to designated facilities for drinking Zamzam. The Grand Mosque is equipped with well-maintained ablution areas and 20,000 Zamzam water containers to meet the needs of pilgrims during Ramadan.
Worshippers are urged to dispose of plastic cups properly, avoid uncovering water containers, refrain from spilling water, and not use Zamzam for ablution. The authority has also ensured the strategic distribution of ablution facilities to provide easy access across the Grand Mosque.
