OETC Commissions Fault Current Limiter Project to Boost Grid Stability in Muscat

Muscat: Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC), a member of Nama Group, has successfully completed the construction and commissioning of the Fault Current Limiter (FCLR) project on the 132kV transmission network in Muscat Governorate. With an investment exceeding OMR 4 million, the initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening the reliability and safety of Oman’s national electricity grid.

The installation of Fault Current Limiters (FCLs) is designed to limit excess current during fault conditions without disrupting the power supply. These devices safeguard critical infrastructure—including transformers, circuit breakers, and cables—from thermal and mechanical stress. FCLs also eliminate the need for costly equipment upgrades when fault levels exceed design thresholds due to system expansions or new interconnections, ensuring uninterrupted electricity transmission across the grid.

This project aligns with OETC’s broader strategy to enhance the sustainability and resilience of the national transmission network. By integrating modern technologies and adhering to global best practices, the company aims to improve operational efficiency, minimize system failures, and enable rapid emergency response.

Commenting on the development, Eng. Masoud bin Salam Al Riyami, Chief Operations Officer at OETC, said:

“The successful commissioning of the FCLR project marks a key milestone in elevating the quality and efficiency of our power transmission services. It underscores our commitment to building a smarter, more robust grid that meets Oman’s growing energy needs.”

He also emphasized OETC’s strategic five-year plan to continually assess and upgrade network infrastructure, with a focus on future-ready solutions to meet increasing demand and sector transformation.

“We are committed to cost-effective, high-standard investments that ensure long-term grid stability. The FCLR project is a cornerstone in that journey,” he added.

OETC is the sole entity responsible for electricity transmission and control across the Sultanate, operating networks at voltages of 132kV and above. The company also manages Oman’s link to the GCC Interconnection Grid, which operates at 220kV, playing a crucial role in regional energy cooperation.
