Nasa’s Mars rover Perseverance snapped in its ‘new home’

National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (Nasa)Perseverance rover has successfully settled in its “new home” on Mars. The rover, which landed on the red planet’s surface on February 19, send back some stunning images of the Martian surface soon after making the historic landing.

But what does Perseverance look like on Mars? The European Space Agency (ESA) released an image of the rover as it comfortably stationed itself on Mars’ surface.

The Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), which is part of the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars program, took to Twitter on February 25 to share images of Perseverance.

The TGO caught sight of Perseverance in the Jezero crater of Mars “from its vantage point, high above the Martian skies”. It also captured images showing the rover and other elements of its landing vehicle.

“There you are Nasa Persevere! I finally got the chance to take a photo of you in your new home, (sic)” the agency tweeted.

On February 23, the TGO snapped pictures with its Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) that showed the Perseverance — and also its parachute, heat shield, and descent stage elements – within the Jezero crater, a report in Science alert said.

The report mentioned two images: The first image (1) shows visible elements, while a series of dark and bright pixels are indicated in the second image (2).

The descent stage and heatshield are dark spots spaced around two smaller craters, while the parachute and backshell are visibly bright spots in close proximity to each other.

“The Perseverance rover, near the bottom centre, is a relatively faint spot by a small ridge leading from one crater,” the report said. It is here that Perseverance will spend the next two years or even more, searching for signs of past microbial life
