Muscat’s Old Airport to Get New Life as Aviation Hub and Tourist Spot

Muscat : The historic Old Muscat Airport is set for a major transformation into an aviation-themed destination, featuring an aviation museum, shopping centres, restaurants, and a range of entertainment and commercial attractions.

The initiative, led by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), aims to preserve the airport’s rich aviation heritage while revitalising the site into a dynamic hub for residents and tourists alike.

During a recent media briefing, Eng. Naif Al Abri, President of the CAA, revealed that multiple investment proposals have been submitted and are currently under evaluation by Oman Airports. He emphasised the dual objective of the project: cultural preservation and economic sustainability.

“These proposals aim to transform the old airport into a vibrant, multifunctional destination while maintaining its historical significance,” said Al Abri. “Oman Airports is currently reviewing the submissions to identify the most suitable and strategic development plans.”

Once Oman’s primary aviation gateway and former base of Oman Air, the old airport holds deep historical value. The proposed redevelopment seeks to celebrate this legacy while introducing modern experiences and commercial offerings.

Aviation Sector Shows Strong Growth in 2024

Alongside the redevelopment announcement, Eng. Al Abri shared positive performance metrics for Oman’s aviation sector in 2024:

  • Total revenue: RO 105 million, reflecting solid financial performance.
  • Aircraft movements: Over 540,300 flights recorded in Omani airspace — a 14% increase from 2023.
  • Passenger traffic: Grew by 2% year-on-year.
  • Flight operations: Exceeded 120,000 movements during the year.
  • Air cargo: Surpassed 150,000 tonnes, indicating robust demand across logistics and freight.

These figures underline the growing importance of Oman’s aviation industry and its role in the country’s broader economic diversification plans.

The redevelopment of the Old Muscat Airport stands as both a tribute to Oman’s aviation past and a forward-looking initiative to enhance Muscat’s cultural and tourism appeal.
