Our Correspondent

A 40-year-old goldsmith from Kannur in Kerala was found dead in his room in Dubai on August 9. The deceased was identified as Shaji Alathum Kandiyil who lived in the Deira area. A resident of Dubai for 13 years, he owned a small jewellery workshop in Dubai Gold Souk.

He is survived by his wife and two children aged 7 and 2.

Shaiju, younger brother of the deceased, said: “He was not responding to my calls. When I went and checked in his room, I found it locked from inside.”

“We saw his dead body through a small gap in the door but we could not open it. We immediately called the police,” said his cousin Junesh.

“I know he had some financial problems and was depressed. But I had no clue that he would take his own life,” said Shaiju, who is also working in Dubai.

The police have closed the case and the body will be repatriated to Kerala on August 14, said the brother.
