COVID-19 cases in Kerala sees new high, reports 5,376 fresh cases

Kerala on September 23 reported the highest ever single-day spike of 5,376 COVID-19 cases, informed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan while briefing the media.

The total case count reached at 1,48,132. The state also registered 2,591 recoveries taking the total recovery to 1,04,322.

Out of the new cases, 4,424 infections were through contact, among them infection source of 640 persons remains unknown.

The Chief Minister also confirmed 20 more deaths. The total death toll now stands at 592.
Ninety-nine health workers were also confirmed of COVID-19 on September 23.

The district-wise break up of positive cases: 852 from Thiruvanathapuram, 624 from Ernakulam, 512 from Malappuram, 504 from Kozhikode, 503 from Kollam, 501 from Alappuzha, 478 from Thrissur, 365 from Kannur, 278 from Palakkad, 262 from Kottayam, 223 from Pathanamthitta, 136 from Kasaragod, 79 from Idukki, 59 from Wayanad.

In the last 24 hours, 51,200 samples have been tested. In total, 25,45,385 samples.

Of the 2,12,629 people under observation,1,86,140 are home/institutional quarantined and 26,489 hospitalised. Seventeen new places were designated as hotspots. Currently, the state has 641 hotspots.

The Chief Minister said that many youngsters are testing positive in the state. The COVID-19 death rate among Kerala youth is just 0.1 percent. However, overconfidence may cause adverse results, CM said.
