New Delhi: King Charles III was officially proclaimed as Britain’s new monarch in a historic ceremony of the Accession Council in London. Earlier on Friday, King Charles had bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales on his eldest son William, who is the and daughter-in-law Kate, who are the next in line for the throne.
Charles became the King after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday. During his first address to Britain and the Commonwealth as monarch late on Friday, King Charles III said he feels “profound sorrow” at the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, and has vowed to carry on her “lifelong service” to the nation.
Meanwhile, India has declared one-day state mourning on September 11 as a mark of respect on Queen Elizabeth’s demise. Condolences poured in from around the world following the demise of the 96-year-old monarch. Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered her as a “stalwart of our times”, saying she “provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people” and “personified dignity and decency in public life”.
