Central Model United Nations organised via Zoom

JOSEPH ALBIN

The first edition of Central Model United Nations (CMUN) was held on July 25, and 26, 2020 via the Zoom platform. The event was a befitting global platform that enhanced a multitude of 21st century skills in students besides training them in detailed research to stay abreast with international affairs.

CMUN is an international MUN recognised by the UN secretary general António Guterres and headed by the executive board members in which delegates can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.

Model United Nations, also known as MUN, involves and teaches participants speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities. Usually an extracurricular activity, some schools and institutions across the globe also offer Model UN as a class. It is meant to engage students and allow them to develop deeper understanding into current world issues.

MUN used to be conducted on an annual basis in many reputed institutions and schools across the globe. In the light of the covid 19 crisis where events as such could no longer be conducted, the team of CENTRAL MUN took it as a responsibility to conduct the event from the comforts of home , while at the same time providing quality, professionality and a fruitful learning experience.

The event encouraged delegates to embrace their role as members of the global community and thus emphasizes their commitment to peace and security. The participants were given a simulated committee experience of the UN with its different bodies such as the United Nations Human Rights Council, European Union and United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

The sessions were held by video conference from July 25 to 26 and were attended by more than 150 participants from various countries across the globe, including the United Kingdom of Britain, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Peru, United States, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Canada, Nigeria, India and many more.

Delegate affairs were supervised by Ms. Sai Sri Kanda and Mr. Avi, the head and assistant head of delegate affairs respectively, while Mr. Kaif Hussain, the editor-in-chief was responsible for everything concerning the design & creativity of certificates and the templates used on social media for marketing the event.

The secretary generals of CMUN 2020 were Mr. Sheheryar Mouzam and Ms. Alia.

The delegates exchanged soul-stirring ideas and solutions on the topic ‘Combating human trafficking in conflict and post conflict zones’ in the UNHRC led by chairperson Ms. Alia and vice-chairperson Mr. Joseph Albin.
