Kochi: Kerala is set to transform into a major investment hub, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said at the Global Investors Summit 2025 in Kochi.

Addressing global investors, policymakers, and industry experts, he highlighted Kerala’s evolving investment landscape and the state’s efforts to build an investor-friendly environment.

He said, “Kerala is a state renowned for its natural beauty and has been an attraction for tourists from within the country and abroad. Kerala’s investment scenario is on the cusp of history. We are witnessing progress and change for the better in our investment arena.”

He added, “It is at this juncture that this Summit is taking place, bringing together global investors, visionaries in the field, experts and policymakers aiming to explore the investment potential of Kerala and witness our initiatives towards building an investor-friendly architecture in the state. The changes we have brought about now are not incremental but substantial.”

He emphasized the government’s role in creating a favourable investment climate, stating that Kerala’s policies are designed not just for short-term gains but for long-term economic transformation.
“Kerala has become a noteworthy example of achieving a high score in human development indicators, is now taking a leap towards achieving the status of an investment hub. The government here considers that it has a great role to play as a facilitator and a catalyst. We have taken a holistic view and are paying equal attention to all matters from policy formulation to the last mile implementation,” he added.

Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary, who also spoke at the event, stressed the importance of stability and long-term policy vision for investors.
He praised Kerala for its focus on education and skill development, which he described as critical factors in attracting global investments.

“People want the rule of law. People want rule-abiding citizenry, respect for the law, and respect for rules, and they want long-term visibility. Our Prime Minister is perhaps the best in goal setting. It is not just about the size and scale of announcements getting made,” Chaudhary said.

He urged investors to take note of Kerala’s commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce, which is crucial for industries such as technology, manufacturing, and services.
“No longer can India be considered a back office. India is where the heart of innovation is beating and thriving, and that’s where I invite you to pay attention to how Kerala has always been investing in educating and skilling its younger people. There’s a recent report that says that the highest spending on higher education is happening in Kerala across all the states,” Chaudhary said.

Kochi: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has kept the CPM-led Kerala government’s hopes on its ambitious SilverLine semi high-speed rail project which had to be shelved following intense political opposition and public protests. The Union minister hinted at the BJP-led Centre’s interest in the project while addressing the inaugural session of Invest Kerala Global summit organised by the Kerala government at Lulu Bolgatty International Convention Centre in Kochi on Friday.
“We have also now the project SilverLine, a semi-high-speed train coming up between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod, which will reduce the (travel) time,” the minister mentioned while listing out Kerala’s industrial achievements in the past and the ongoing initiatives. The minister mentioned the SilverLine with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Industrial Minister P Rajeev, two of the key promoters of the project, and Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan, who has vehemently opposed it, on the dais.
Later speaking to media while leaving the venue, Goyal clarified that SilverLine is a project under the consideration of the central government. “It had its own political issues to be resolved by the people and government of Kerala. Union Railway Ministry has asked for certain clarifications and inputs from the state government. It’s a project under consideration at both the state and the Centre,” he said.
In his speech, Goyal praised Kerala for implementing projects like the Cochin International Airport, the first such project under the public-private-partnership, Water Metro and Vizhinjam port.
“India is contributing 16 per cent of the global economy growth. We are at the forefront of providing the growth engine to the world. We have moved from the 11th largest economy to the fifth largest economy in the last 10 years. And by 2027, every estimate demonstrates that India will be the world’s third-largest economy. And how can Kerala be left behind when India is progressing at this brink and speed with the opportunities that Kerala offers. Whether it is tourism, manufacturing, or logistics, in every sphere, Kerala is at the forefront of development,” he said.
The Union minister said the proposed Rs 3,800-crore industrial township would offer opportunities to investors to come in and manufacture high-quality modern goods in the fields of technology and electronics.
In his inaugural address, Chief Minister Vijayan said Kerala’s investment scenario is on the cusp of history. “The changes we have brought about now are not incremental but substantial. Kerala, the State which has become a noteworthy example of achieving a high score in Human Development Indicators is now taking a leap towards achieving the status of an investment hub. The Government here, considers that it has a great role to play as a facilitator and a catalyst. We have taken a holistic view and are paying equal attention to all matters, from policy formulation to the last mile implementation. We have ensured that no investor coming to Kerala will have to face the cobweb of procedural delays and meet the barriers of red tape. We have made major strides in simplifying procedures as regards investments,” he said.
State Industries Minister P Rajeeve chaired the meet. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari addressed meet online. Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of Economy, UAE, HE Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Industry and Commerce HE Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro, Leader of the Opposition, Kerala, V D Satheesan and NORKA ROOTS Vice Chairman M A Yousuff Ali were among those who spoke at the inaugural session.
Over 3000 delegates are attending the conclave, which will focus on various verticals such as AI & Robotics, Aerospace & Defence, Logistics, Maritime and Packaging, Pharma, Medical Devices & Biotech, Renewable Energy, Ayurveda, Food Tech, High Value-Added Rubber Products, Tourism & Hospitality and Recycling & Waste Management.
Along with business sessions and country-focused interactions, the summit also features sessions to take the government’s New Industrial Policy that has identified over 22 priority segments to be promoted in a pro-active manner. The summit is organised by the Kerala government with the support of various industry organisations.

Kozhikode: MT Vasudevan Nair, Malayalam’s master of lyrical nostalgia, died on Wednesday in Kozhikode. The 91-year-old writer breathed his last at Baby Memorial Hospital. His mortal remains will be taken to his home in Kozhikode soon. In the visuals aired on news channels, a huge number of people were seen flocking to the writer’s residence here.
The last rites will be performed at Mavoor road crematorium here on Thursday around 5 pm. No public homage will be conducted, as the writer was completely against it, reported Manorama News. But people will be allowed to give last respects to MT at his residence.
The writer was rushed to the hospital on December 15 after suffering a cardiac arrest. On Tuesday, doctors said that MT is out of ventilator support. But his condition turned very critical on Wednesday night.
Popularly known as MT, Nair has left an indelible mark on the worlds of novels, short stories, screenplays, children’s literature, travel writing, and essays.
He directed six movies, including the poignant ‘Nirmalyam’, a classic in Malayalam cinema, and two documentaries. The nation honoured MT with the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian award, in 2005.
In addition to the Padma award, MT has received the Jnanpith, Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, Vayalar Award, Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Vallathol Puraskaram, and JC Daniel Puraskaram, to name a few.
His screenplays for the film have won the national award four times and the state award 11 times. MT was adjudged the best film director three times in Kerala.
“With the passing of MT, we have lost a genius who had elevated Malayalam to the pinnacle of world literature. It is an irreplaceable loss for Kerala and the world of Malayalam literature,” Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in his condolence message.
The state government will observe two days of official mourning, on December 26 and 27, as a mark of respect for MT. Pinarayi has instructed the postponement of all government programmes, including the cabinet meeting scheduled for Thursday.
Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair was born at Kudallur, then in Malappuram’s Ponnanni taluk, on July 15, 1933. The village on the banks of Bharathapuzha river was later brought under the ambit of Pattambi taluk in Palakkad.
MT studied at Mamakkavu Elementary School, Kumaranellur High School and Victoria College in Palakkad. He started writing during his school days.
His elder brother, MT Narayanan Nair, and Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri, his senior in school, influenced MT’s reading and writing during his formative years. He initially penned poems before shifting to prose.
MT immersed himself in reading and writing during college. His first collection of stories, ‘Raktham Puranda Mantharikal’ (Blood-stained Grains of Sand), was published while he was still a student at Victoria College, Palakkad.
He shot to prominence after his story ‘Valarthumrugangal’ (Pet Animals) won the first prize in the 1954 World Short Story Competition organised by the New York Herald Tribune.
After completing his college education, he briefly worked as a maths teacher and ‘gramasevakan’ at a block development office at Thaliparamba in Kannur. In 1957, he joined the Mathrubhumi Weekly as a sub-editor.
‘Naalukettu’ (The House Around the Courtyard with Four Pillars, in English translation) was MT’s first major novel, published as a book. The novel won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award.
MT gave a new direction to literary journalism in Malayalam. He is often credited with encouraging and publishing the first works of many writers who later became towering personalities in Malayalam literature.
In 1965, MT debuted in Malayalam cinema with the screenplay for ‘Murappennu’, directed by A Vincent. His first directorial venture, ‘Nirmalyam’, won him the President’s Gold Medal for the best feature film. PJ Antony, who portrayed a temple oracle in the movie, won the national award for the best actor for the role.
From then on, MT wrote screenplays for more than 50 movies, several of which won national and state awards and were commercially successful.
Kalam, Nalukettu, Asuravithu, Randamoozham, Manju, Pathiraavum Pakal Velichavum, Iruttinte Athmaavu, Olavum Theeravum, Kuttyedathi, Swargam Thurakkunna Samayam, Vanaprastham, Dar-es-Salaam, Arabi Ponnu (with NP Mohammed), Ninte Ormakku (stories), Murappennu, Kadhikante Kalam, and Kadhikante Panippura (collection of essays) are some of his major literary works.

Wayanad: The Centre has reiterated that Kerala has sufficient funds in the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for relief operations after the Wayanad landslide. In response to the letter from KV Thomas, Kerala’s special representative in New Delhi, Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, said that under the existing guidelines of SDRF/NDRF, there is no provision to declare any calamity as ‘National Disaster’. Thomas had, on August 2, sent a letter to the Prime Minister requesting the Centre to declare the landslide/flash flood in Wayanad as a ‘National Disaster’.
Nityanand Rai said in the letter that the primary responsibility of disaster management rests with the state governments. In the event of a ‘severe’ disaster, additional financial assistance is extended from the National Disaster Response Fund ( NDRF), which includes an assessment based on the visit of an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT). The minister said that an IMCT was constituted on August 2 to assess the loss of immediate nature without receipt of any formal memorandum from the state government. “The IMCT visited the affected areas of the state from August 8 to 10. Based on the report received from the team, action is taken by the Central government as per the established procedure,” the minister said in the letter.
He also reiterated the figures in the statement furnished by the Centre in the High Court. The state government was allotted Rs 388 crore (Rs. 291.20 crore central share, Rs 96.80 state share) for 2024-25 under the SDRF. In the aftermath of the tragedy in Wayanad, the central government released both the instalments of the central share of SDRF in advance, amounting to Rs 145.60 crore, each on July 31 and October 1, respectively. In addition, Principal Accountant General (A&E), Kerala, reported a balance of Rs 394.99 crore in its SDRF account as of March 31, 2024. As such, an amount of Rs 782.99 crore (Rs 291.20 crore central share, Rs 96.80 crore state share, Rs 394.99 crore as balance on 31.03.2024) was available in the SDRF account of the state for management of necessary relief measures in the affected areas, according to the Centre.
Kerala has requested three things from the Centre: immediate additional relief assistance, the writing off of affected families’ loans, and the notification of the Meppadi landslide as a disaster of ‘severe nature’.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is to deliver verdict on Malayalam actor Siddique’s anticipatory bail petition in connection with allegations of raping a female actor on Tuesday. Justices BM Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma will hear the petition.Siddique, currently on interim anticipatory bail, has denied the charges made against him by the investigation team and submitted an affidavit on Monday.
The actor’s defence argues that the police fabricated allegations that the complainant never mentioned. He claims that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is fabricating stories against him. However, the government lawyer will argue that there is evidence against Siddique and that he should not be granted bail as he needs to be taken into custody for questioning.
Further, Siddique alleged that the police are conducting a “media trial” against him, stressing that he does not hold significant influence in the Malayalam film industry. “I’ve only played a handful of key roles, mostly supporting characters,” he clarified.
It was in August the Museum police in Thiruvananthapuram charged the actor under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The charges stemmed from a complaint filed by a young female colleague who accused him of sexually assaulting her at the Mascot Hotel in Thiruvananthapuram on January 28, 2016. However, Siddique has denied these allegations.
On September 24, the Kerala High Court denied his anticipatory bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the necessity for custodial interrogation. However, on September 30, the Supreme Court granted him anticipatory protection from arrest.
Following these developments, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), established to investigate sexual assault complaints from multiple women in the Malayalam film industry, interrogated Siddique twice, on October 7 and October 12. The SIT reported that Siddique refused to cooperate with their inquiries and indicated that no further notices would be issued for his appearance.

Thiruvananthapuram : The Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a motion urging the Union Government to take two immediate decisions for the victims of the Wayanad landslide disaster: One, release the financial assistance the Kerala government had sought in its memorandum, as the delay in sanctioning funds was adversely affecting the rehabilitation process. Two, invoke its power under the National Disaster Management Act and write off the victims’ loans.
The unanimous motion was the upshot of an adjournment motion moved by the UDF on the need to speed up rehabilitation measures in Mundakkai and Chooralmala and to secure immediate assistance from the Centre. There was a general consensus in the House that the Centre should not be allowed to remain indifferent to Kerala’s needs.
“An entire area has been destroyed. This landslide should be recorded as one of the worst in the country’s history,” the motion said. “Kerala has sought from the Centre just the legitimate financial support required for the inevitable rehabilitation and reconstruction of an area devastated by a disaster of unprecedented proportions,” the motion said.
It said that the Kerala government had placed its needs before Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visited Wayanad and also subsequently.
During the discussion, Revenue Minister K Rajan made a sarcastic comment about the Prime Minister’s empathetic gestures during his Wayanad visit. “When the PM was here, it was with great emotional depth that he spoke of the 1979 Gujarat floods during which he was part of an RSS rescue and relief team. The way he wiped his eyes at the thought of the 1979 tragedy, I thought it would not take even ten days for the assistance to reach us,” Rajan said.
The motion passed unanimously in the Kerala Assembly said that “till date Kerala has not received any assistance.”
It said the Meppadi landslide fell under the “Disaster of Severe Nature” category as per the National Disaster Management Act. “Other disaster-affected states have been assisted even without a memorandum. Unfortunately, Kerala has not received such a consideration,” the motion said.
Earlier, while participating in the discussion, Opposition Leader V D Satheesan used strong words against the Centre. “What kind of neglect is this? We have not been offered even temporary relief. What gives the Centre the courage to ignore Kerala deliberately,” Satheesan said. “I think it is time for us to apply greater pressure and move beyond the usual means of presenting memoranda,” the Opposition Leader said.
Further, the motion said that under section 13 of the National Disaster Management Act, 2005, the National Disaster Management Authority had the power to write off the loans of the victims of disasters of a severe nature. “The Centre should take immediate steps to invoke this power for the victims of the Chooralmala and Mundakkai landslides,” the motion said.

Thiruvananthapuram : Speaker A N Shamseer on Friday summarily rejected an adjournment motion moved by UDF’s Vadakara MLA K K Rema on the Hema Committee report saying the issue was sub-judice.
The Speaker did not allow Opposition Leader V D Satheesan even to make a walk out speech. The Speaker also stressed that it was his decision to reject the motion, and not the government’s. “When the Chair itself rejects the motion, it is against Parliamentary decorum to make a walk-out speech. But you can make a brief walk-out statement,” the Speaker said.
The Opposition Leader told the Speaker that he was responsible for the UDF bringing the issue to the Assembly as an adjournment motion. “When we asked a question related to this, you told us to bring this up as a Submission or anything else other than a question,” Satheesan said. Nonetheless, the Opposition Leader did not contest the Speaker’s decision and staged a walkout without fuss.

Later, he told reporters that the Speaker’s action was unfair as there were innumerable precedents of the Assembly discussing issues that were in the courts. The ‘solar case’ is a telling example, Satheesan said.

Had the adjournment motion been tabled, the UDF’s crucial argument would have been that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Culture Minister Saji Cherian had lied about the contents of a letter written by Justice Hema to forever stall investigation into the grave sexual offences detailed in the Hema Committee report.
The government had said that Justice Hema, in a letter to the government, had sought an assurance that the contents of the report would not be made public under any circumstances.
“She has not said anything of that sort,” Satheesan said, and read out from the last line of Justice Hema’s letter to the government: “We have been following the principles laid down by the Supreme Court in various decisions in keeping the matter extra confidential. I would also take the liberty to alert you to follow these principles before parting with the report to anybody in a routine manner.”
Clearly, Satheesan said the Justice had only asked the government to keep in mind certain guidelines laid down by the SC before making the report public. “She did not tell the government not to publish. But the CM and the Culture Minister gave Justice Hema’s words an unintended spin,” Satheesan said.
Satheesan also argued that the government was bound to act – “register an FIR and begin an investigation” – when it had been informed of a series of sexual offences that had been committed. “Not to act on the information is a criminal offence,” Satheesan said.
If the victims were reluctant to appear before the Special Investigation Team, Satheesan said it was the consequence of the government’s pro-offender reputation. “We saw how the government protected the abusers in the Walayar case where school girls subjected to rape were found hanging,” Satheesan said. Even the courts had flagged the ” lethargy” of the LDF Government in these cases, Satheesan said. “They will go to any lengths to protect people close to them,” he said.
K K Rema said that if there was a name for the shameless eagerness to throw a protective shield around hunters, it has to be ‘LDF government’. She said that pages that even the High Court did not want concealed were not published by the government. “The government is trying to protect a mafia in the film industry that is scared not of the public ignominy if their names are revealed but of the inconvenience that could result from the legal process,” Rema said.
Satheesan said that the victims would have fearlessly come forward had the government given them confidence. “It should have told the victims that their names would be kept confidential and that it would stand by them to bring the rapists to book. But the government did no such thing,” Satheesan said.
Rema said the Hema Committee report was a big fraud played on the people of Kerala. “There is no legal standing for this report. It was not constituted under the Commission of Enquiries Act and so is nothing but a study report,” she said.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] State Secretariat has removed senior leader EP Jayarajan from his position as the convenor of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The decision was made on Saturday, with reports suggesting that Jayarajan had expressed his intention to resign from the role. Jayarajan, who returned to Kannur on Friday night, will not participate in the CPM State Secretariat meeting scheduled for the same day.

Speculation is rife that T P Ramakrishnan could be a potential successor for the convenor position. CPM State Secretary M V Govindan is expected to address the media at 3:30 PM on Saturday to provide further details.

The move comes in the wake of controversy surrounding Jayarajan’s admission of a meeting with BJP leader Prakash Javadekar on the morning of the 18th Lok Sabha election. Jayarajan revealed that Javadekar had visited him at his son’s residence in Akkulam, Thiruvananthapuram, but maintained that no political discussions took place during their meeting. He also alleged that a conspiracy against him was underway.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan responded sharply to Jayarajan’s revelation, criticizing him for his poor judgment regarding the company he keeps. Vijayan remarked after casting his vote, “Jayarajan is not careful with the company he keeps. We should be cautious about our associations and avoid relationships that could cross certain boundaries.” His comments were seen as a direct rebuke to Jayarajan, emphasizing past concerns over his prudence.

Director Jude Antony has publicly addressed a troubling incident involving a junior artist on the set of his film 2018. In an interview with 24, Antony revealed that a prominent actor misbehaved with a female junior artist during the filming. He emphasized that the actor in question played a significant role in the film.

According to Antony, after the incident was brought to his attention, the problematic actor was replaced with another performer to complete the film. Antony has called for the identities of those involved to be disclosed, stating that evidence should be made public and that the perpetrators must be held accountable.

Antony also voiced concerns about broader issues within the film industry, including drug use, and stressed the need for a comprehensive investigation rather than focusing solely on one issue. He recounted an experience where he had to wait for hours for a lead actor to arrive on set. Despite arriving late, the actor reportedly insisted on filming his scenes first, leading to further complaints from the producer about additional financial demands.

In response to the allegations, the government has announced the formation of a special investigation team. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed the appointment of the team following consultations with the Director General of Police (DGP). The seven-member team will be led by Crime Branch ADGP H. Venkatesh and includes S. Ajitha Begum, G. Poonkuzhali, Aishwarya Donkare, Merrin Joseph, V. Ajith, and S. Madhusudanan. The team will investigate the complaints, and a case will be filed if the accusations are substantiated.

The Althia Women’s Association has formally requested the Home Department to initiate a POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) case, citing specific findings in the Hema Committee report. The complaint, referencing paragraph 82 on page 41 of the report, underscores that certain crimes outlined in the report fall under the POCSO Act.

In their letter to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, the association argued that the committee’s report makes a clear distinction between crimes affecting girls and women, justifying the need for POCSO-related action. P.E. Usha, representing the association, highlighted that paragraph 82 of the report addresses the reluctance of victims to disclose their experiences of sexual violence due to fear of retaliation, and emphasizes the importance of maintaining confidentiality to protect these victims.

The complaint asserts that, per section 19 (1) of the POCSO Act, the police should be notified when such information is available. It urges the Home Department to review the report’s findings and take appropriate action while ensuring the privacy and safety of the victims.

The association stressed that implementing these measures is crucial for ensuring that young women in the arts can work and grow without fear. They called on the government to act swiftly in response to the report’s findings, which were based on direct testimonies gathered by a committee led by a former High Court judge.

Actor Indrans, driven by a determination to complete his education despite past challenges, has enrolled in the state literacy mission’s seventh-grade equivalency exam. At 68, he arrived at Attakulangara School in Thiruvananthapuram to take the exam, where he was warmly congratulated by Education Minister V. Shivankutty via a Facebook post.

Indrans had to stop his education in the fourth grade due to financial difficulties in his family and later worked at a relative’s tailoring shop to make ends meet. It was from this background that he eventually entered the film industry. His current pursuit of education is a testament to his belief that age should not be a barrier to learning.

The exam is being held at the Government Higher Secondary School near Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, the tests will start at 9:30 AM each day, covering six subjects over the two days. Those who pass will be eligible to join the 10th-grade equivalency course directly. A total of 151 individuals are participating in the exam.
