Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: With a noticeable rise in Covid-19 cases across Kerala, Health Minister Veena George has urged the public to exercise heightened caution, particularly when it comes to the elderly and individuals with underlying health conditions, as they remain most vulnerable to severe illness.

In a statement, the minister confirmed that the dominant circulating variants in Kerala are the Omicron JN.1 sub-lineages LF.7 and XFG, which, though not highly severe, pose a significant risk of rapid transmission.

“Masks should be worn in public places and while travelling. Although these variants are not as severe, their high transmissibility calls for strict preventive measures,” said Veena George. “Genomic sequencing is actively being conducted to monitor the spread and mutation of the virus.”

Rising Case Numbers and Regional Breakdown

As of the latest update, Kerala has 2,223 active Covid-19 cases, with 96 individuals undergoing treatment, many of whom have coexisting medical conditions. The districts with the highest caseloads are:

Ernakulam – 431 cases

Kottayam – 426 cases

Thiruvananthapuram – 365 cases

Hospitals have been directed to prioritize testing for individuals showing symptoms such as cold, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath. All medical institutions must ensure the availability of oxygen, and avoid unnecessary referrals to private hospitals.

Preventive Measures and Public Health Guidelines

Minister George emphasized the importance of continuing basic Covid-19 precautions:

Wearing masks in public areas and mandatorily in hospitals

Avoiding non-essential visits to healthcare facilities

Frequent hand hygiene using soap or sanitiser

She recently chaired a meeting with the Rapid Response Team (RRT) to assess the preparedness of the state’s health infrastructure and monitor the evolving situation.

National Context and Variant Surveillance

Across India, 6,815 active Covid-19 cases have been reported. According to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), 163 cases of the XFG variant have been detected nationwide.

Former ICMR Director General Dr. Balram Bhargava noted that the emergence of such variants is part of the natural evolution of the virus. He assured that India is well-equipped to detect and respond swiftly, thanks to tools like the Truenat molecular diagnostic platform.

To secure favourable marks, at least 70 per cent of the businesspersons must respond positively to Kerala’s efforts. Of the total score, 70 per cent will be based on entrepreneurs’ experiences with online services, while the remaining 30 per cent will be determined after verifying the authenticity of the submitted documents.
The state expedited its efforts last month after the Chief Secretary convened a meeting with various department secretaries following delays in implementing reform action points, giving stern instructions to ensure timely completion. Although the procedure must be finalised by March 15, the feedback from entrepreneurs must also be collected by then.
According to the Centre’s guidelines, states must implement reforms in 26 business sectors and 435 regulatory measures. Kerala has already completed most of these reforms, with the Local Self-Government Department and Department of Factories and Boilers handling the majority of them.
States that implement at least 90 per cent of the required reforms will be placed in the ‘top achiever’ category, with rankings expected to be announced in late May. Last year, Kerala secured the top rank after leading in nine reform categories.

Thiruvananthapuram: Amid rising complaints from the public about being duped in a massive fake Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund scam, estimated to exceed Rs 10 billion, Kerala State Police Chief (SPC) Sheikh Darvesh Sahib has handed over the investigation to the Crime Branch.

The decision, taken after extensive consultations, was announced on Monday.

The probe will be led by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) H. Venkatesh, with separate teams being formed in all 14 districts of the state to handle the mounting complaints.

Initially, 34 cases have been transferred to the Crime Branch. However, early scrutiny of bank accounts linked to the NGO ‘Muvattupuzha Socio-Economic Development Society’ and the alleged mastermind, 26-year-old Anandhu Krishnan, suggests the number of cases could exceed 30,000, as nearly 100,000 individuals are believed to have fallen victim to the scam.

Krishnan lured victims by promising them products such as scooters, laptops, and sewing machines at half the market price. His promotional campaigns convinced many to invest their hard-earned money in what seemed like a lucrative deal.

The scam has also implicated political figures across Kerala’s three major political fronts – the ruling CPI(M)-led Left, the Congress-led UDF, and the BJP – following reports that several leaders received funds from Krishnan.

On Monday, first-time Congress MLA Mathew Kuzhalnaden strongly denied allegations aired by a Malayalam TV channel that he had collected Rs 700,000 from Krishnan. Expressing outrage, Kuzhalnaden stated in the Kerala Assembly that he would take legal action against the channel.

“My only connection with this case was when a party colleague told me that he and a few others had deposited money but had not received their promised goods. I contacted Krishnan and asked him to either refund the money or deliver the goods. Later, all the money was returned,” Kuzhalnaden clarified.

Krishnan’s police custody ends on Monday, and with the initial round of questioning and evidence collection completed, authorities have decided not to seek an extension. He will now be remanded to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Sai Trust chairman K.N. Anand Kumar, a well-known social figure from the state capital, is also under scrutiny due to his association with Krishnan. Denying any wrongdoing, Anand Kumar stated, “I have not disappeared. All donations received have been properly accounted for and have undergone due legal processes.”

Former Kerala High Court Judge C.N. Ramachandran Nair has also been named in one case, a move he strongly contested. Denying any involvement, he stated that he was never a patron of Krishnan’s organisation and had merely served as an advisor before resigning from the post.

Investigations have revealed that Krishnan enjoyed a lavish lifestyle, spending Rs 338,000 on air travel to Delhi and back and Rs 366,000 on luxury hotel stays in December alone. Authorities have also identified 21 different bank accounts linked to Krishnan and his organisations.

With the Crime Branch now leading the probe, attention is focused on whether the investigation will implicate political leaders who had publicly endorsed Krishnan’s activities.

Mumbai: The intruder who stabbed Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his home in Mumbai still remains at large despite more than 30 teams on the lookout for him on Friday, while a Maharashtra minister ruled out underworld link to the brutal attack.

The attacker was not working for any criminal gang and probably was not even aware whose house he had entered in, said police, citing their investigation carried out so far.

Police picked up a carpenter in connection with the attack on Khan (54) at his apartment in the wee hours of Thursday as he resembled the intruder, and brought him to the Bandra police station for questioning on Friday morning, but released him later.
A senior police official clarified the man was not related to the attack on Khan and no one has been arrested so far.
“The person detained in the morning has been released. He was picked up as he looked like the intruder captured in the CCTV footage. But he had an alibi which was verified by the police.

Based on that, the detained person has been released. Our probe is still on. We are looking at all angles,” said the senior official.

“This seems to be a stray incident. The alleged intruder was not working for any gang as per prima facie investigation. He probably was not even aware whose house he had entered in,” he added.

He said more than 30 teams have been formed to track down and nab the attacker, who stabbed Khan in his 12th floor apartment during a robbery attempt.

The attacker’s face was captured in CCTV footage. The video showed the assailant, wearing a red scarf and carrying a backpack, scurrying down the stairs from the sixth floor of the ‘Satguru Sharan’ building, where Khan lives, at around 2.30 am.

Maharashtra Minister of State for Home (Urban) Yogesh Kadam said robbery was the motive behind the incident and clarified no underworld gang was involved in the knife attack.

The filmstar is recovering well at Lilavati Hospital, where he was taken after the brutal attack by an intruder in the early hours of Thursday that left him with multiple wounds, and is expected to be discharged in two to three days, doctors treating him said.

The actor, who suffered multiple stab injuries, including in his neck, underwent an emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital, where he was rushed in an autorickshaw.

“We are observing his progress and he is doing excellently well according to our expectations. As per his progress, we have advised him bed rest and if he is comfortable, then in two to three days we will discharge him,” said Dr Nitin Dange, neurosurgeon at Lilavati Hospital.

He said a team of doctors checked on him and made him walk.

“Khan had four main wounds, which were a little deep, two in the hand, one on the neck and the most deep and dangerous was in the spine,” said the neurosurgeon, who led the team of doctors who operated on the actor.

During surgery, the doctors removed a 2.5-inch knife fragment lodged in his spine. They noted that if the knife had gone just 2 mm deeper, it could have caused a severe injury.

“So, we operated and removed it. But from there, the spinal fluid was leaking. Due to that repair, we are keeping him under observation. Today he is doing excellent. Wounds are healing and he has no neurological deficit,” Dr Dange informed.

His health parameters have improved and he has been shifted from the ICU to a special room, he said.

“Today we will be keeping visitors in check, because we want him to take a rest. Only thing we have advised is that he has to take rest for some time, because of the wounds on the back especially, which can have chances of infection, and his movements are restricted for a week almost,” he said.

“Besides visitors, his own movements are being restricted for a faster recovery, said the surgeon.

Doctors have removed the sharp object and done repairing of the spinal injury, he explained.

An image of the sharp object, a knife blade, went viral on social media.

“He is very lucky. We repaired the leaking spinal fluid and the dura which was there. We had to do a repair, which was successful. Today when we made him walk, he was completely okay to walk. He is on a regular diet,” he maintained.

The doctor said Khan was soaked in blood, but walked into the hospital, also located in Bandra, “like a lion”.

“When sir Wali sahib (referring to Khan) came to the hospital, he was covered in blood, but he walked in like a lion with his small child, that is his 6 to 7-year-old son, Taimur,” Dr Dange said.

Meanwhile, autorickshaw driver Bhajan Singh Rana, in whose vehicle the actor was rushed to the hospital, is hogging media limelight and is being hailed as a hero.

Rana said he was not aware that the passenger with blood-soaked ‘kurta’ he ferried to Lilavati Hospital was popular actor Khan, a Padma Shri awardee.

“It was only when we reached the hospital gate that he called the guard to fetch a stretcher, saying he was Saif Ali Khan,” he told reporters.

Rana said when he was passing by the building where the actor stayed, a woman and a few others asked him to stop the rickshaw.

“Then the person whose white kurta was soaked in blood got in the auto. I noticed he had neck and back injuries, but did not notice the hand injury,” he said.

“He (Saif) walked into the auto. There was a seven-eight year old boy who also boarded the rickshaw,” he said, when asked if the actor’s son Taimur accompanied him to the hospital.

“When we reached the hospital, he called out to the guard at the gate and told him: ‘Please bring a stretcher. I am Saif Ali Khan’,” he said.

Wayanad: The Centre has reiterated that Kerala has sufficient funds in the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for relief operations after the Wayanad landslide. In response to the letter from KV Thomas, Kerala’s special representative in New Delhi, Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, said that under the existing guidelines of SDRF/NDRF, there is no provision to declare any calamity as ‘National Disaster’. Thomas had, on August 2, sent a letter to the Prime Minister requesting the Centre to declare the landslide/flash flood in Wayanad as a ‘National Disaster’.
Nityanand Rai said in the letter that the primary responsibility of disaster management rests with the state governments. In the event of a ‘severe’ disaster, additional financial assistance is extended from the National Disaster Response Fund ( NDRF), which includes an assessment based on the visit of an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT). The minister said that an IMCT was constituted on August 2 to assess the loss of immediate nature without receipt of any formal memorandum from the state government. “The IMCT visited the affected areas of the state from August 8 to 10. Based on the report received from the team, action is taken by the Central government as per the established procedure,” the minister said in the letter.
He also reiterated the figures in the statement furnished by the Centre in the High Court. The state government was allotted Rs 388 crore (Rs. 291.20 crore central share, Rs 96.80 state share) for 2024-25 under the SDRF. In the aftermath of the tragedy in Wayanad, the central government released both the instalments of the central share of SDRF in advance, amounting to Rs 145.60 crore, each on July 31 and October 1, respectively. In addition, Principal Accountant General (A&E), Kerala, reported a balance of Rs 394.99 crore in its SDRF account as of March 31, 2024. As such, an amount of Rs 782.99 crore (Rs 291.20 crore central share, Rs 96.80 crore state share, Rs 394.99 crore as balance on 31.03.2024) was available in the SDRF account of the state for management of necessary relief measures in the affected areas, according to the Centre.
Kerala has requested three things from the Centre: immediate additional relief assistance, the writing off of affected families’ loans, and the notification of the Meppadi landslide as a disaster of ‘severe nature’.
