What’s Behind the Rupee’s Fall?

The main factor impacting currency markets right now is the uncertainty surrounding US President Donald Trump’s ongoing global tariff strategies, including trade negotiations with India.

“Indian markets are watching the ‘deal or no-deal’ scenario closely,” said Neelesh Gopalan, Treasury Manager at a Dubai-based financial firm. “In the latter half of July, the dirham-rupee rate is forecast to stay above 23.4 and could even touch 23.5.”

Though this may concern some, it’s still more favorable for NRIs compared to earlier this year, when the rupee hovered around 23.0–23.2, with only occasional dips to 23.3. In mid-June, the rupee briefly fell to 23.62 during the Israel-Iran geopolitical tensions.

“The rupee may test 23.5 temporarily, but that’s likely to be short-lived,” said Subramanian Sharma, CEO of Greenback Advisory Services. “If recovery occurs, we could see a return to 23.3.”

The rally gained strength following the re-election of Donald Trump as U.S. President. After the initial surge, Bitcoin hovered around the $100,000 level for several months, as market sentiment was dampened by uncertainties surrounding Trump’s economic policies — despite his administration’s pro-crypto stance. Now, with broader risk assets like equities also reaching record highs, Bitcoin has resumed its upward trend.

“This shift signals a maturing perspective on Bitcoin — not merely a speculative asset, but a macro hedge and a structurally scarce store of value,” said George Mandres, senior trader at XBTO Trading LLC. “A surge in risk-on sentiment across equities, coupled with significant institutional inflows into spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, has fueled this steady ascent, notably absent the sharp volatility of previous bull runs.”

Bitcoin rose as much as 1.9% to $121,344 and is now up roughly 30% since December. The world’s largest cryptocurrency more than doubled in value last year.

A key factor behind the recent rally was the forced liquidation of bearish crypto positions, with over $1 billion in short bets wiped out at the end of the week, according to data from Coinglass.

Investor excitement has also been bolstered by anticipation of “Crypto Week” in the U.S. Congress, where lawmakers are expected to debate and potentially vote on major cryptocurrency legislation.

Still, not all analysts are convinced the rally is sustainable. “In my view, this isn’t a macro-driven rally, but rather an isolated event,” said Nicolai Sondergaard, a research analyst at Nansen. “That said, recent U.S. policy developments such as fiscal expansion and expectations of further monetary easing have created a backdrop that is undeniably favorable for Bitcoin.”

Oman Positioned as a Premier Investment Destination

Promoting Oman as a stable, investor-friendly destination remains a core focus for the Omani Embassy in Algeria. Officials are engaging directly with Algeria’s business community to highlight Oman’s many advantages for foreign investors—including full foreign ownership of projects without the need for a local partner.

Mohammed bin Ali Al Lawati, Acting Director of the Investment Promotion Department at Oman’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, underlined several incentives: up to 10 years of income tax exemptions in key sectors like manufacturing, tourism, agriculture, and technology, along with customs exemptions on imported raw materials and machinery.

Algeria Targets $10 Billion in Omani Investments

Algeria, on its part, is seeking over $10 billion in Omani investment over the medium term. According to Omar Rekash, Director General of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency, numerous Omani companies have already submitted investment proposals.

Ongoing talks include the establishment of a direct shipping line between Oman and Algeria in partnership with Asyad Group, and a marine fishing project involving Mauritania as a third partner. Additional ventures under discussion include a Hyundai automobile assembly project and a large-scale aluminum smelter.

Pharmaceuticals, logistics, and strategic industrial developments top the agenda as both countries deepen bilateral cooperation. Algeria, Rekash added, has introduced comprehensive legislative reforms to enhance investor confidence, offering protections and guarantees for foreign capital.

Since the reforms were enacted, Algeria has registered more than 15,600 investment projects—including 271 with foreign participation—underscoring the country’s renewed appeal as a regional investment hub.
