Bihar election phase 1: voter turnout at 7.3%

The much awaited Bihar assembly election 2020 has begun with the first phase of polling in 71 seats today. Of the 243 seats, 71 assembly constituencies in 16 districts, are voting in the first phase of the Bihar elections. More than 2 crore voters in Bihar will decide the fate of 1,066 candidates today. So far, voter turnout stands at 7.35 percent.

The fight is between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which comprises the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (United) JD(U) among others, and Mahagathbandhan or Grand Alliance that is made up of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress and Left parties. The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) is going solo this year.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi will go for the second round of campaigning. PM Modi will address three rallies today in Patna, Darbhanga and Muzzafarpur, while Rahul Gandhi will address at Valmiki Nagar and Kusheshwar Asthan in Darbhanga.

The 2020 Bihar assembly election will be held in three phases and the results will be announced on November 10.
