Heavy rain wreaks havoc in Andhra, Telengana

At least 15 people died in Telengana and Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, as heavy rain triggered by a depression in the Bay of Bengal wreaked havoc across the twin Telugu states. Nine people, including a two-month old, have died in Hyderabad after a compound wall collapsed and fell on ten houses due to heavy rain.

Normal life has been heavily interrupted in multiple parts of the city. With several areas in Hyderabad flooded, traffic has been affected as vehicles in flooded areas are unable to move.

Telangana and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh have been witnessing heavy rain for the last three days. Twelve people have died in Telangana in the last 48 hours following incessant rains that lashed several parts of the state, leading to flooding on roads and inundation of some low-lying areas.

At least 14 districts of Telangana have been affected.

In its weather warning for Telangana, the Met Centre in Hyderabad said thunderstorm accompanied with lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana on October 14. Heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places, it added.

The heavy rains, triggered following a deep depression over west central Bay of Bengal, led to water-logging at several areas in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Rivulets and other water bodies were in spate in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district and the administration directed officials to take up immediate repairs to roads wherever damage was reported.

The district administration appealed to the people not to venture out until the water level in rivulets and the flooding receded, according to an official release.
