Eighteen people were killed when an Air India Express AXB1344, B737 flying from Dubai to Calicut, with 191 people on board, crashed on landing, fell 35 feet into a valley and broke into two. Several people are reported to be seriously injured in the accident.
The incident took place around 7.38 pm. The plane crashed on the Kondotty-Kunnumpuram road on the cross belt road via Melangadi.
The pilot, Captain Deepak Vasantha Sathe, who was among those killed, had 30 years of experience, including 12 years in the Indian Air Force. The co-pilot, Akhilesh Kumar, who was seriously injured in the incident, later died at MIMS hospital.
Rescue operations at the airport came to an end after all the passengers were transported to hospitals. Seventeen people have been admitted to Kondotty hospital, 18 in Baby Memorial hospital and eight to MIMS.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan over the phone about the Karipur plane crash. The Chief Minister informed the Prime Minister that a team of officials, including Kozhikode and Malappuram District Collectors and IG Ashok Yadav had arrived at the airport and were participating in the rescue operation.
The Chief Minister informed the Prime Minister that the state government has taken all steps to provide treatment to the injured and all other facilities. The Prime Minister promised all the assistance of the Central Government. The Chief Minister said that all the mechanisms of the State government will be used to deal with the emergency.
The Prime Minister asked Union Minister of State V. Muraleedharan to go to the Kerala immediately.
Mr. Vijayan has directed district authorities to take immediate rescue measures. The Chief Minister directed Local Self Government Minister A.C Modeen to rush to the spot and lead the rescue operation. Mr. Moideen has left for Karipur from Thrisur.
Mr. Vijayan expressed shock over the tragic crash of the Air India Express at Kozhikode airport. The Chief Minister has asked all government agencies to engage in rescue operations using all government facilities. He also has deputed an IG of Police to oversee the rescue operation. Fire and Rescue teams of two districts’ also have been engaged. Health authorities have been instructed to provide all possible medical aid to save lives of victims.
President Ram Nath Kovind has tweeted that he was deeply distressed to hear about the tragic plane crash of Air India Express flight at Kozhikode, Kerala. He spoke to Governor of Kerala Arif Mohammed Khan and inquired about the situation. He sent his thoughts and prayers for the affected passengers, crew members and their families.
According to a DGCA statement, Air India Express AXB1344, B737 flying from Dubai to Calicut, with 191 people on board, on landing at Runway 10, continued running to the end of the runway, fell down a valley and broke into two pieces.
The visibility was 2000 metres due to heavy rain at the airport. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Air India Express Limited in a press release stated that it regrets to inform that its flight IX-1134 was involved in an accident on 7, August at Calicut Airport. It immediately activated an Emergency Command Centre. It has also established a passenger information centre for the kin of the passengers who travelled in the flight. They can contact the toll-free number 1800 2222 71. The press release also said that Emergency Response Team members and GO teams have already been sent to the accident scene, and will render necessary help to assist the emergency services and local authorities.
The Indian Consulate in Dubai has said that the relatives of the Air India Express passengers in the UAE that crashed at the Kozhikode airport should contact the emergency number. Contact 056 5463903, 054 3090572, 054 3090572 and 054 3090575. The flight from Dubai was carrying 184 passengers and seven crew members, including 10 children.
