“A heart beating with hope”: Oman makes history with first successful heart transplant

MUSCAT : The Ministry of Health released a statement hailing the achievement, declaring, “A heart beating with hope… The Sultanate of Oman achieves a historic medical achievement with the first heart transplant performed by Omani hands.”

This historic operation, led entirely by an integrated Omani medical team, marks a transformative moment in the country’s healthcare sector.

Speaking at a media event to announce the achievement, His Excellency Dr Hilal bin Ali Al Sabti, Minister of Health, affirmed that this achievement represents a milestone in the journey of the healthcare sector in the Sultanate of Oman, as the heart transplant from a brain-dead donor was performed according to the highest medical and ethical standards, and in accordance with national laws and approved international recommendations in the field of organ donation.

“This achievement is not only the result of the efforts of a single medical team; rather, it reflects a comprehensive national vision that embodies wise leadership, the competence of national capabilities, and the spirit of humanitarian giving. Healthcare workers have also demonstrated their readiness to perform medical duties with a high degree of competence and responsibility,” he stated.

The five-hour procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, cardiologists, anaesthesiologists, and transplant specialists—all Omani professionals—reflecting the nation’s growing medical capabilities and investment in local talent.

The recipient had been suffering from end-stage heart muscle insufficiency and was considered a high-risk patient.
